The Geekly with a Twist: January 6th-12th

Hey all!  Your favorite Lush here escaped (at last) from the infirmary (that darn flu had to catch me to start off the new year)…just in time for your weekly geeky dose of history!  So, without many sneezes, coughs, or whines, onward with the history!

January 6th, 1998: NASA launches the Lunar Prospector.  The mission was an attempt to find water on the Lunar surface.

January 7th, 1610: Galileo Galilei changes the face of the solar system when he sights three of Jupiter’s moons.  He discovered a fourth on the 13th of the same month.

January 7th, 1929: The first science-fiction comic strip: “Buck Rogers 2429 A.D.” (later renamed “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century”) appears in newspapers around the U.S.

January 8th, 1642: Galileo dies in Italy, 13 years and one day after his discovery of the moons of Jupiter.

January 8th, 1942: The man who would become an academic celebrity, the author of A Brief History of Time, and super genius, Stephen Hawking is born in Oxford, England.

January 9th, 1995: The Russian cosmonaut Valeri Poliakov broke the record for the longest continuous time spent in outer space aboard the Mir space station.

January 11th, 1902: “Popular Mechanics” magazine is published for the first time.

January 12th, 1966: The “Batman” television show debuts on ABC.

January 12th, 2005:  “Deep Impact,” a space probe designed to study the Comet Tempel 1, is launched from Cape Canaveral.

For your Twist, how about a Comet Cocktail?

  • 1 1/4 ounces butterscotch schnapps
  • 1 1/4 ounces Irish cream
  • 1 1/4 ounces Goldschlager
  • Sambuca (just enough to float)

Mix the schnapps, cream, and Goldschlager in a shaker with ice.  Strain into a cocktail glass.  Carefully float (you can use a bar spoon as a help) a little bit of sambuca and sprinkle with cinnamon.  Light the cocktail on fire!  BIG Note: Blow out the flame before you drink!  The flames are just for show, don’t forget to blow them out!

Of course, what would your Geekly be without your Garnish

This week, I’m taking a bit of a spin on the old Garnish and rather pointing you to the new Facebook page for Comic Con Carne.  If you’re out of the loop, Comic Con Carne will be the latest addition to the SciFi4Me lineup and features news from in and around the comic book world.  Stay tuned for Issue 1 to drop!

Anyways, I’ll be around trying to finish getting over the last of this bug.  Hopefully I’m not a zombie this time next week.  Until then, geek on!
