The Geekly with a Twist: August 31st-September 6th

Muahahahah! I come to you now without even the aid of computer! I have perfected the mind-to-computer connection! Okay, so I’m full of it. But I AM away from my computer on vacation. So! I’m actually writing this on what is a full 5 days before my vacation (and over a week before this is being published). Time travel! Voila! Okay, so, I warned you, full of it. Regardless, I hope you all are having an amazing week here in the future and now, onward with the history!

August 31st, 1962: The voice actor behind characters in works ranging from Star Wars: The Clone Wars to Halo and Adventure Time with Finn and Jake (among many other things), Dee Bradley Baker is born in Bloomington, Indiana.

September 1st, 1875: Edgar Rice Burroughs (the author behind Tarzan and, of course, John Carter in case you’ve not been paying attention) is born in Chicago, Illinois. (Did you know? We have A Princess of Mars in The Library!)

September 1st, 1902: Le Voyage dans la lune (A Trip or Voyage to the Moon in English) is released in France. This black-and-white silent film is considered the first SciFi film (it was loosely based off of Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon and H.G. Wells’ The First Men in the Moon).

September 1st, 1926: Gene Colan, the comic book artist behind titles such as Daredevil and Howard the Duck and such characters as Falcon and Blade, is born in The Bronx in New York.

September 1st, 1942: Hugo Award-winning SciFi author C.J. Cherryh is born in St. Louis, Missouri. (Did you know? She went by her initials because SciFi was a male-dominated field and the ‘h’ at the end of her name was added to avoid sounding too much like a romance novel writer.)

September 1st, 1959: A man of amazing artistic talent, Joe Jusko is born in New York City. (Psst, in related news, I totally need this: a book of artwork based on the works of a man who shares this birthday.)

September 1st, 1974: The mad genius behind Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Invader Zim, Johnen Vasquez is born in San Jose, California.

September 1st, 1975: Michael Corvin himself, Scott Speedman is born in London, England.

September 2nd, 1946: Comic book writer and artist Walt Simonson is born in the United States.

1973 The fantasy world loses a great when J.R.R. Tolkien passes away in Bournemouth, England. The Great Professor is buried with his wife, Edith, in Oxford.

September 3rd, 1974: Known for her role as the Buffy villain Glory, Clare Kramer is born in Atlanta, Georgia.

September 4th, 1968: The voice behind Bender and Jake the Dog (from Adventure Time), John DiMaggio is born in North Plainfield, New Jersey.

September 4th, 1998: Google is founded in Menlo Park, California.

September 5th, 1973: The beautiful fourth Charmed one, Rose McGowan is born in Florence, Italy.

September 6th, 1939: Author of the StarFist novels, Dan Cragg is born in Rochester, New York.

So, since I’m in Barsoom this week and, in honor of Misters Burroughs and Jusko, how about an Iced White Ape of Barsoom for your Twist?

  • 1 cup white chocolate hot cocoa
  • 1 1/2 oz Irish cream
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon

Mix ingredients while cocoa is warm save for the cinnamon. Fill a glass with ice and pour in cocoa mixture. Float whipped cream on top and sprinkle a pinch of ground cinnamon. Instead of cinnamon, you can always sprinkle it with a bit of blue colored sugar. This one is also yummy warm, as you might imagine.

And, of course, let’s Garnish up the week. I’m feeling very space-y lately. As a matter of fact, between the Curiosity rover and my current trip, I’ve been getting really into stuff that’s, well, out of this world. Because of this recent re-interest, I’ve found myself wasting time on a wonderful website called Space Facts. There’s all sorts of fun facts, pictures, infographs, and even news and links! It’s a great way to keep up with Curiosity and it’s a fun way to spend the day!

So, I’m going to get back to my red soil…until next week, geek on!
