It’s a staple in science fiction. Our neighbor could be the first best place for a colony of humans. It’s intrigued writers and filmmakers for decades. And it’s always been a piece of the puzzle when talking about a space program. Should we already have a base on Mars? Buzz Aldrin thought so many years ago, and it was in the works even as we were landing on the moon.
But what does it take? Can a Mars mission be successfully launched by civilians? Or would it take the resources of a government?
