Luke Evans announced on Instagram that he has been cast to play Wonder Woman’s controversial creator William Moulton Marston in Professor Marston & The Wonder Woman.

The English actor starred in Dracula Untold, The Hobbit trilogy, and the 2017 live action adaptation, Beauty and the Beast. He joins Rebecca Hall, who will play his wife Elizabeth, and Bella Heathcote, who will portray his partner Olivia.

The biopic will follow the complicated story behind the creation of Wonder Woman, accused of promoting sexual perversity, causing Marston to defend his feminist superhero while living a secret life with his wife, Elizabeth, and his partner, Olive. It has been said he based the physical look of Wonder Woman on Olive while it was Elizabeth who had the idea to make the iconic superhero female, having all the power of Superman while being a good and beautiful woman.

In addition to his work in comics, Marston, who received a PhD from Harvard in 1921, is also recognized for his efforts in psychology and his invention of a blood pressure based lie detector test, also inspired by his wife when he noticed her blood pressure would rise when she was angry.

The project was developed by writer/director and screenplay writer Angela Robinson, who also has produced How To Get Away With Murder and True Blood. Amy Redford, Andrea Sperling, and Terry Leonard are producing with Jill Soloway and Boxspring Entertainment co-founder Clare Munn as executive producers.

Filming has begun but no official release date has been given.
