Emmy-winning star of The Big Bang Theory Jim Parsons has been tapped to produce The CW’s new project, The Terranauts. The project is from Warner Bros TV and That’s Wonderful Productions, co-owned by Parsons and Todd Spiewak.

The Terranauts is based on T.C. Boyle’s book, released today. Inspired by the Biosphere 2 experiments from the 1990s, the book follows eight scientists, four women and four men, running a biosphere near Tillman, Arizona that will prove vital for survival in an off-Earth colony. While their goal is to create a sustainable environment for generations to come, things do not go as planned. The drama blends science, society, sex, survival, and human folly and ambition. Other books by T.C Boyle include the PEN/Faulkner Award-winning Worlds’ End and The Harder They Come.

Zach Helm, known for his screenplay for the National Board of Review and PEN award winning Stranger Than Fiction and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (which he also directed), will write the project. Helm, Parsons, and Spiewak will executive produce and Eric Norsoph, Head of Development and Production for That’s Wonderful, will oversee the project.

Parsons is best known for his role as Sheldon on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. He and Spiewak started That’s Wonderful Productions in 2013. This is their second season developing projects. Last year they sold an untitled multi-camera comedy written by Marisa Coughlan to CBS about the life of an independent writer-columnist in her late 30s deciding to become a single mother.

Parsons can be seen next in the Fox feature Hidden Figures, which opens on December 25.
