Interview: Let’s Get WETA Digital with Terry Notary from WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

The film War for the Planet of the Apes shows Caesar at his most human when his family is murdered in the middle of a war he didn’t start but has every intention to end. He sets out for revenge but finds his soul put at risk as he delves deeper into his dangerous obsession.

This weekend, I had the opportunity to speak with Terry Notary, the man behind the apes in the final chapter (and every previous one) of the Planet of the Apes reboot.

Terry Notary is the movement coach for all the films in the trilogy as well as the not as well-reviewed Tim Burton Planet of the Apes. So he’s been there from the beginning. He also plays the role of Rocket in the most recent films including the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes. Together, we talked about how he brings the primates to life. We also discussed how he got from Cirque du Soleil to the most successful film franchise in recent memory. In addition, we talked about the role of WETA digital effects in showing an authentic ape world.

The video below delves into the performance capture technology used in making the film. Director Matt Reeves introduces us to the magic of WETA Digital effects and demonstrates how the visual effects company has evolved to include various locations from the real world.

20th Century Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Terry Notary, Amiah Miller and Karin Konaval. It’s directed by Matt Reeves. The movie comes out July 14th. But you probably already knew that.
