Green Lantern Party Ideas

“In brightest day, in blackest night,…”

This really needs no introduction as many of you already know that Green Lantern is now out on Blu-Ray & DVD.  For those of you looking to have a little fun with your Green Lantern weekend, here are some special treats for celebrating with friends.

Main course: Hal-burgers
In honor of the main character of the movie, have some burgers!

The recipe is simple…take a pound of ground turkey, split it in half and mix in chopped spinach until the meat is green (you can also mix in your favorite seasonings).  Form the symbol with the green meat and fill in the rest of the patty with the regular stuff and grill ’em up!  If you have any problems with the meat sticking together, you can use a bit of oil and I’ve found it always does the trick.  In using turkey instead of ground beef, the symbol stands out a lot more and looks really cool.  Some great toppings include avocado, pesto, or even green onion and cream cheese (to keep with the theme).

Side dish: Baked Abin Sur-agus

1 bunch Fresh Asparagus
Olive Oil
Sea salt
Feta cheese
Dried basil

Preheat broiler. Rinse asparagus, and chop about 1 1/2 inches off the bottom of each spear.
Place the spears on a cookie sheet in a single layer.
Drizzle with olive oil and top with feta, a dash or two of sea salt, and basil.
Place your cookie sheet under the broiler for about 5 minutes (watching carefully!). Once the spears are bright green, they should be perfect!

You can also adapt this recipe to the grill by using a grill tray and leaving the cheese and seasoning until after the asparagus is pulled from the flame.

Dessert: Lantern Pops (for adults only!)

3 cups Lemon-Lime Kool-Aid
2 oz white rum
3 Kiwi fruit
1 large Granny Smith Apple

Prepare Kool-Aid according to package.  Mix in rum (*note, any stronger and the popsicle is not likely to harden).  Slice apple and kiwi and cut out the Green Lantern symbol in each slice.  Mix fruit (cuttings can be included for extra chunkiness) and the liquid, pour into plastic cups and freeze for approximately one hour (until slightly hardened).  Add popsicle sticks (or your approximation of) and allow to finish freezing (3 hours at least, sometimes upwards of 12).
And, last, but not least…

Cocktail: The Lantern Tea-ni
(What, did you think I’d forget the cocktail?)

1 1/2 oz Cold green tea (prepared)
1 1/2 oz Gin
1 Lime
1 Cucumber, sliced

In a shaker, muddle 1 cucumber slice, add ice, tea, gin, and a squeeze of the lime.  Shake and strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with a lime wheel and cucumber lantern.

I hope you all enjoy!
