GAME OF THRONES will have a SEVENTH SEASON. Also the Sky is Blue.
In a move that came as a surprise to literally no one, HBO announced that it will renew fantasy behemoth Game of Thrones for a seventh season. And thus, we may all rest assured that the Earth will continue to turn uninterrupted for another year. The press release came out just three days before the premiere of season six and the massive internet block party that comes with the annual airing of Thrones.
While HBO declined an further details regarding season seven, there are rumors that the days of Thrones are numbered. Entertainment Weekly reported last week that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have planned for the show to have a 73-hour run. That means seven episodes in season seven and a paltry six episodes for season eight, in contrast to the ten episode standard we’ve received so far.
HBO was quick to soothe fan fears. According to entertainment president Michael Lombardo, “In every conversation, that’s been [their] thinking. It will be interesting to see how strongly they feel about being definitive about that when we are in a position to announce seasons 7 and 8.”
But, as they say in Westeros, “words are wind.” Nothing is official until HBO makes it so. And since HBO has been quite satisfied with Thrones’ performance thus far, it’s difficult to imagine that they’d let it go so easily.
In the meantime, I’ll be brushing up on my Dothraki and getting my strongwine ready for Sunday.
Game of Thrones season six will premiere on HBO this Sunday, April 24 at 9/8c. I’ll be live-tweeting the whole thing, so feel free to come tell me how much you hate Ramsay Bolton.
