EW Cover Features DC Trinity

Entertainment Weekly has exclusive photos from the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which feature the DC Comics “Trinity” — Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman — on the cover of a double-size issue preliminary to San Diego Comic-Con.

Quoting director Zach Snyder, the accompanying article includes some of his first discussions with producers Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, in which what began as an Easter egg idea turned into something more. “I said, ‘What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there’s a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor,’” says Snyder. “Everyone was like…‘Okaay.’ Once you say it out loud it’s a problem because you can’t unsay it.”

The older, war-weary Batman (Ben Affleck) will face off against the alien who could be overlord Kal-El (Henry Cavill), who hasn’t yet settled into his “Superman” persona — a subject discussed at great length on our H2O podcast — along with appearances by Wonder Woman, Princess Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa).

Calling it “a marathon within a marathon”, Snyder has the responsibility of bringing three comic book icons together for the first time in live-action form, and also setting the table for the greater DC Cinematic Universe, which many see as running a lengthy second place behind rival Marvel Studios, which has been in the race since Iron Man in 2008.

The DC universe was supposed to kick off in 2011 with Green Lantern, but the poor box office performance quickly put the stake in that plan, leaving Warner Brothers with having to re-start with Man of Steel in 2013, a full five years after Marvel had started flying.

Warner Brothers is set to have quite a presence at Comic-Con in San Diego this year, with new information about both Batman v. Superman and (hopefully) Suicide Squad, as well as previews of Pan and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

There will also be panels surrounding the WB television franchise — The Flash, Arrow, Lucifer, Gotham, Supergirl, and more — throughout the weekend. This includes a first look at the animated Vixen, as well as a Q&A with the producers of Legends of Tomorrow.

There’s also a rumor that San Diego Comic-Con will be where we learn the name(s?) of the new Green Lantern(s?). Set for release in 2020, Green Lantern has been the center of energetic speculation for months, with an online fan campaign to get Furious 7 star Tyrese Gibson in the role of John Stewart, a campaign that resulted in Gibson taking a meeting with Warner Brothers. And only last week did we learn that WB might also be considering Chris Pine for the role of Hal Jordan in the same film, leaving some to wonder if the movie would feature the entire Green Lantern Corps (perhaps WB’s answer to Guardians of the Galaxy?).

Most of the “news” is rumor and speculation at this point, but we’ll share more as things develop.
