Season two production has begun on Syfy’s Dark Matter, with the development of new sets and additions to the cast.

Producer Joseph Mallozzi (Stargate, Sanctuary) has been posting regular updates to his WordPress blog, and shared the news that Melanie Liburd is joining the cast as a character named Nyx. Liburd is also set to appear in Game of Thrones as High Priestess Kinvara during the next season.

Headshot_MelanieLiburd“So who is Nyx?  Is she friend or foe?  And what’s her secret?  (I only ask because, well, it would seem that every member of our crew has held some sort of secret.) For now, all I’m going to say is this: Galactic high security detention facility’s make strange bedfellows!

I’ll also say this about Melanie – she absolutely nailed the audition.  We had a lot of strong candidates for the role, but she delivered like no other and I immediately knew SHE was our Nyx.  Talented, yes, but also downright lovely.  We are lucky to have her.

Kind of reminiscent of the excitement I felt after watching the audition of a certain Melissa O’Neil last season.”

Mallozzi also posted photos of the production’s new sets currently under construction.

Mallozzi writes, “Production Designer Ian Brock, his team, and the Dark Matter construction department never fail to impress.”

Brock and his art department also have been working on a design for a new shuttle to be featured in season two. After a first round of decisions, there were eleven design options, and Mallozzi had the choices narrowed down enough to involve fans in the selection process, giving them a choice in the design.

The final selection was announced on November 23rd:

The design may get a few slight revisions as it progresses from artwork to physical and CG model, but this will be the design that makes it into the show.

Mallozzi also reported that new set pieces (a new food dispenser among them) are being designed and crafted, and actors have been reporting for costume fittings while he finalizes scripts. The show will also be getting a new location in the Maximum Security Detention Facility Hyperion-8.

Dark Matter centers around a crew of pirates who wake up on their ship without any memories. As they progressed through the first season, they learn who they are and what they’re about, and they decide they don’t like their old selves very much. Though everyone seems to be on board with striking out on a new path, one of the crew is a mole who betrays them. The season ended with the crew of the Raza in shackles.

Dark Matter returns to Syfy in 2016.
