CYBERFROG 2 Crosses One Million Dollars
On Tuesday, June 30, Ethan Van Sciver’s Cyberfrog 2: Rekt Planet campaign crossed the $1 million threshold on Indiegogo.
This marks the third comics-related crowdfunding project to cross one million dollars. The first was Rich Burlew’s Order of the Stick, a collection of Burlew’s self-published fantasy-comedy web comic. With 14,952 backers, the project netted $1,254,120 between January and February 2012. The second was Todd MacFarlane’s campaign to deliver an updated anniversary edition of the original Spawn action figure and comic from 1995. The MacFarlane campaign, which ran in the midst of the quarantine this year, raised $3,447,390 with 23,761 backers.
In a livestream celebrating the achievement, Van Sciver said, “Thank you so much for this incredible moment, in which we just utterly annihilated all expectations. Everyone who doubted us, right now, is very sad, I guess.”
The Cyberfrog sequel comic also includes PVC figurine of the title character, with a figurine of the Salamandroid character available as well.
The original Cyberfrog was a sixteen issue run from Harris Comics that started in 1993. The story follows a cybernetic sentient bullfrog, the result of an accident in which alien energy merged robotic tech with a terrestrial bullfrog following a crash landing on Earth (the merging was supposed to include a human). Van Sciver revived the character for Cyberfrog: Bloodhoney, also funded through a campaign on Indiegogo.
The new story picks up twenty years after the 1998 invasion of Earth by the Vyzpzz, aliens that resemble giant wasps. The Vyzpzz are now using Earth as a farm of sorts, harvesting humans for food (the titular “bloodhoney”). Cyberfrog revives out of hibernation to find the Vyzpzz dominating the planet and now has to find a way to fight repel the invaders and save humanity.
Van Sciver now has completed twelve projects on the funding platform, which has been a favorite for many independent comics creators. He recently launched his own comic book publishing imprint, All Caps Comics.
