The final chapter of the post-apocalyptic franchise Resident Evil has officially cast Ali Larter to reprise her role as Claire Redfield.

Tentatively titled Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the story picks up where Resident Evil: Retribution left off, as Project Alice faces off against the villainous Red Queen as “she” attempts to destroy what is left of humanity. Paul W.S. Anderson will return to direct the script he wrote for the sixth and final film of the series.

The movies are based on a franchise of survival horror video games of the same name. This series has been on of the most successful game-to-movie adaptations, grossing over $915 million worldwide through the first five films.

The success of the initial video games is what spurred the franchise to branch out into comic books, novels and novelizations, animated sequels to the games, this series of live-action films, and a variety of associated merchandise.

The overall plot of the film franchise is loosely based on the video game franchise and focuses on characters fighting outbreaks of zombies and monsters. Seen in the first film, this zombie apocalypse was initially due to the release of the T-virus, a biological weapon created by the fictional bioengineering pharmaceutical company, the Umbrella Corporation.

bothThis corporation is the series’ main antagonist, under which the Red Queen comes to being. The main protagonist throughout the series is Alice, played by Milla Jovovich, an entirely original character created for the film series. Alice was once a security operative working for Umbrella, but throughout the films has become an enemy of the corporation.

Characters from the Resident Evil video games also appear in the film series, including Jill Valentine, Carlos Olivera, Albert Wesker, Chris Redfield, Barry Burton, Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Larter’s Claire Redfield.

This will be Larter’s third Resident Evil film. Shooting was supposed to start August 2014; however, with the birth of Jovovich’s child, it will start shooting this September, in South Africa.
