Brett Riley’s New Freaks Novel Gets Artwork

The third entry in Brett Riley’s Freaks series of superhero novels, Rubicons, is set to hit shelves August 1, 2023, and we have the opportunity to share with you the cover art for the book.

Rubicons follows the self-styled “Freaks” as they enter junior year in high school in Quapaw City, Arkansas. They face a new foe — adulthood, just around the corner. Not only do they face an uncertain future that comes with growing up, but they also have to contend with a new threat from The Team, a shadowy government agency dedicated to saving the world from supernatural menaces.

On top of that, they face a new danger from a creature of scales and wings that threatens every life in town.

Riley says, “In Rubicons, I thought it was important to show that each “Freak” has reached that point where they are evolving past each other and finding their own points of view, both for life in general and concerning how they choose to be heroes. Not all of their choices are going to be good ones. They will learn that sometimes, actions and words are irrevocable, no matter how hard you try to justify them or make up for them.”

The Freaks series follows four high school students who are frequently the target of bullies. When they accidentally open a portal to another dimension, all manner of terrifying other-worldly creatures escape to invade their small town. When they discover the event has given them superpowers, they dub themselves “Freaks” and decide to fight for the lives of family and friends in mortal peril while also taking on a secret government task force that appears to be hunting them.
