BATWOMAN Pilot Adds to Cast
The recently announced Batwoman pilot has more people moving into Gotham City.
As reported in Deadline, the new cast members are Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf), Camrus Johnson (Luke Cage), and Nicole Kang (You).
Tandy will play Sophie Moore, a high level private security agent and protector of Gotham. In the pages of DC Comics, “Gimme” Moore had a relationship with Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) before Kane was outed as a lesbian and forced to resign. Moore eventually rose to the rank of Colonel and took charge of a military academy near Gotham City.
The character was created by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III, and she first appeared in Detective Comics #859. When the New 52 reboot was launched, Moore first appeared in Batwoman (Vol. 2) #32 by Marc Andreyko and Jeremy Haun.
Little is known about how this character will appear in the series, but from the description given, we can speculate that she’s already out of the military and will likely be an ally for Batwoman. Perhaps she’s the show’s surrogate Jim Gordon?
Johnson will play Luke Fox, the son of Wayne Enterprises R&D executive, Lucius Fox. In the description shared by Deadline, Fox works to keep Wayne Tower secure while Bruce Wayne is away from Gotham City.
Fox is also one of Bruce Wayne’s recruits to expand the Batman brand as part of Batman, Incorporated. He eventually takes over at Batwing after David Zavimbe retired from the role. Batwing was created by Grant Morrison, and the Luke Fox incarnation took over when Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti took over writing duties on Batman Incorporated starting with issue #19.
No indication yet if he’ll don a suit in the CW show.
Kang will take on the role of Mary Hamilton, Kate’s step-sister and “polar opposite”. From the article: “…what Mary lacks in a filter, she makes up for with her compassion for Gotham’s undeserved communities, proving she has more in common with Kate than she thinks.”
Here’s where things get a little muddy, as “Mary Hamilton” doesn’t show up in a search among DC Comics characters. However, this character does align with a “Meredith” character listed among breakdowns examined by That Hashtag Show back in December.
Could Kang be playing the CW version of Bette Kane, Kate’s cousin? The character breakdown calls for a woman in her 20s, preferably Asian or Latin, and “Although she is considered talky, she is deeply compassionate toward those the city has forgotten” which almost matches up word for word the description of the Mary Hamilton character. Noteworthy also is the fact that in the comics, Bette Kane became the modern era Flamebird.
The character breakdowns also include “Sloane”, whom THS is speculating could be Renee Montoya; however, Sophie Moore’s description also matches. It wouldn’t make sense to have an ensemble that includes two of the same character type, unless something terrible is going to happen to one of them. Could it be that the Montoya character not available for some reason?
So far, the casting announcements seem to track with those character breakdowns, which means we should expect to see casting news for Kate’s father, Jake, along with Kate’s twin sister Elizabeth (unless Rose takes on both roles), also known as “Alice” and is Kate’s own Joker.
The Batwoman pilot was written by Caroline Dries and will be directed by David Nutter. No word yet on when production will begin.
