EW has First Image of WONDER WOMAN

So, here it is. And there’s plenty of hate going around the Interwebz about it.

Judging from the pages and pages of negative response this image is getting, one has to wonder (pardon the pun) if this isn’t some wild reverse psychology thing in play.

When DC Comics changed the iconic costume recently, there was a hue and cry, and at one point The Powers That Be acknowledged that the classic costume would return at some point in the future. So is this another bait-and-switch to gin up talk and rumor and fear among Geekdom?

Remember New Coke? For those of you who weren’t around back then (was it really 1985?), some suit at the Coca-Cola Company got a bee in his bonnet about changing the formula for Coke. They even got Bill Cosby to shill for it. And it was a disaster. An unmitigated disaster.  And they very quickly brought back the original formula under the Coca-Cola Classic name. In the long-term, it was a brilliant strategy: put out something everyone hates and make them want the real one back. Sales soared.

We might be seeing some of that strategy here, although I’m speculating. Given what’s been put out there about David E. Kelley’s pilot, I’m not sanguine that anyone connected with “Wonder Woman” have that much savvy, but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until NBC actually airs the show and we all see just how quickly it collapses in on itself.

The more I look at this, the more I wonder if it’s not a costume test shot. Even though Elizabeth Hurley is shooting her scenes now, that doesn’t necessarily mean the costume is a Final Version. It’s possible this outfit is a test for the design, and the real outfit would be made from material that doesn’t make WW look like a $20 street walker out on Halloween looking for Etta Candy.

  • Hmmm a perspective I hadn’t considered before. What you said may be the case, however I too don’t expect such cleverness from the likes of Kelley and crew.

But judgement will be reserved till air. Actually, who am I kidding I’ll bitch about this a lot before then.

    • I can’t believe they’d be that forward-thinking either. If so, they’d be too clever by half. Even if this is some kind of New Coke bait-and-switch, getting the fans all worked up about the costume won’t distract them from the bigger issues of the story. Cleavage and wardrobe malfunctions won’t save this sinking ship.
