Season 4, episode 8: “Spellbound”

Last week we left off with all the local vamps tied down with silver chains for protection from Antonia’s resurrection spell that they feared she was going to unleash on them. Their fear was well founded as Antonia and her follower’s got their chant on and it was too much for Jessica who broke out of her chains and headed upstairs to the daylight and her true death. We were left hanging right as she reached the door.

This week we catch up to Jessica just as she throws open the doors and starts to bask in the rays of the sun. Bask is probably not appropriate. It was more like she starts to bake in the rays of the sun. Before she can go completely up in flames Jason comes flying through the blinding daylight to tackle her back into the house closing the doors behind him. Of course she is still in full vampire mode so his rescue takes a turn as she flips him over and gets ready to chow down. But just then the wind dies down and Jessica comes to her senses. Realizing that Jason saved her life she repays him by finally giving in to her recent building lustful feelings for him. Hoyt be damned.

I totally get the whole kissing on Jason thing even though she is still technically with Hoyt. What I don’t get is why the curse ended so quickly. It’s like Antonia said “I’m going to kill all the vampires in the area by making them walk out into the daylight … but only if they do it within 60 seconds because I’ve got other stuff to do.” Go figure. The reason I mention this is because only one vampire died from the spell. Just one. I mean put a little more effort into it next time. I think her big speeches lasted longer than her chanting the spell. Maybe down a Red Bull next time first.

We also continue the love fest between Eric and Sookie. The silvering has been hard on him and he hasn’t fed since draining Sookie’s fairy godmother. Ever the dutiful girlfriend Sookie offers her blood to Eric so that he can heal. While Eric may not remember anything from his past he does remember how good fairy blood taste so of course he accepts her offer. Being the new nice guy that he is in turn he offers her his own blood so that they can be ‘one’ together. Basically that means I drank your blood and now you drink my blood and we’re going to be high as a kite and dream about making love in the snow in the middle of the woods. Yep, that’s how that went. I for one am hoping Eric gets his memory back soon because this has been dragging on a little too long now.

Tommy decides to cash in with his new found ability to shift into other people. This time he takes on Maxine so that he can meet up with the gas company representative at Merlotte’s. While he looked like Maxine he still carried on cussing and such just like Tommy. Remember a few weeks back I questioned if there was a ‘normal’ in Bon Temps anymore? Well, how in the world could Arlene not notice something was up with Maxine? Really. As is the karma that follows Tommy around his scheme didn’t work out the way he hoped. There was only $5,700 in the deal for the gas lease where he originally thought he was going to get $200,000. Poor Tommy. Still not feeling sorry for this guy.

After her rescue Jessica is back in the dungeon tied down again and enjoying a lovely dream. In her dream she comes home to Hoyt to tell him that it’s over and that she is moving out. He starts crying and whining making it very hard for her to deal with the confrontation. It reaches it peak though when he says he would rather die than lose her. Out of nowhere she says “Then die!” and bashes his head into the counter. I have to say his whining was getting on my nerves too. But then she woke up. When she does finally return home she decides to have the conversation for real. It didn’t go anything like her dream. Instead of turning into a balling mess Hoyt manned up and threw her out by revoking his invitation into his house. Out the door she went flying while Hoyt officially declares himself a vampire hater.

Now homeless Jessica goes to Jason to tell her about the break up and he freaks out. Hoyt is his best friend and has been since the 1st grade. He can’t do anything to hurt his friend but he also has feelings for her. Torn between the two and not being the best at resolving issues Jason revokes her invitation to her house. Deja Vu! Jessica is just having a bad day.

Sam is visiting with Luna and trying to smooth everything over with her after the trick Tommy played last week. Over dinner her ex-husband shows up to cause trouble. Who didn’t see this one coming? The ex-husband is Marcus, leader of Alcide’s new wolf pack. Big shocker. Looks like Marcus and Sam are not going to be friends especially since it appears that little Emma shows she likes Sam more than her own daddy.

Lafayette keeps seeing the black french woman around Arlene’s baby. He knows that she is an apparition and he wants no part of it. Every time he sees her he turns the other way and leaves. Finally someone with some sense. See bad stuff, go somewhere else. This seems to be working for him until she shows up at his house while he is sleeping. This gives us the opportunity to get a little background on her via flashback. Sometime in the past when she was alive she gave birth to a baby from a relationship with a married white man. Fearing how it would look for him and his reputation he killed the baby and we can only assume he killed her at some point. That explains her fixation with Arlene’s baby and the origin of the little burned up baby doll that they can’t get rid of. Turns out she was going to give it to her baby as a gift on the day he was killed. No sooner are we done with the flashback than she turns to black smoke and flies into Lafayette’s mouth possessing him. He is a medium after all. Her first mission in her new body is to go to the Bellefleur’s house to get the baby.

Bill calls Antonia to make a peace overture. They finally agree to a meeting in the cemetery at midnight – alone. None of us are fools. Why would anyone do that? The witching hour comes and Bill and Antonia meet up as planned. Despite all the chit chat earlier about peace neither one came alone. Both sides come with reinforcements. Bill offers Antonia a lasting truce between humans and vampires in exchange for her lifting the curses she put on Eric and Pam. Sounds like a fair trade, doesn’t it? Well, I guess Antonia didn’t think so because before you know it Sookie shouts a warning because she ‘hears’ Antonia working up a spell in her mind. Bill had his guards on standby and they show up with their automatic guns and laser sites. Too bad Antonia whips up some serious fog to blind everyone so those cool little lasers were worthless as the battle begins. Eric tears into one witch as Sookie uses her fairy powers to ward off another. Tara came prepared with a pistol packing wooden bullets. She only needs one shot to make blood soup of a vamp. Unfortunately for her she was standing to close and got slimed in the process. The distraction is enough for Pam to pounce on her. Luckily for Tara Bill shows up before Pam can dig into her. Bill then orders Pam to forever leave Tara alone which obviously makes her furious and as well as makes her question the judgment of her king. Pam takes off leaving Bill to help Tara to her feet. When she ask why he did it his only reply is “You know why.” I’m going to assume because Sookie would never forgive him.

In the middle of the chaos Sookie takes a bullet to the stomach and goes down. Having shared blood earlier Eric feels her pain and rushes through the heavy fog to find her. Before he can locate her she is swept up in the arms of Alcide who had came running when he heard the screams and gunshots. He carries her away but not before we see that he is being followed by Debbie. Eric is still stumbling through the fog when he comes across Antonia. He bares his fangs to attack but she waves her fingers around and down on his knees he goes, totally submissive and under her control. Eric is in quite the pickle this season.

So the big questions for next week are:

  • How will Sookie survive her gunshot wound? Will she feed on Bill’s blood to recover just like the old days?
  • Poor Eric. Now that he is under Antonia’s influence will she use him against the rest of the vamps?
  • What will possessed Lafayette do with Arlene’s baby? And why?
  • Where is Jessica going to live? Back with Bill? Or will Jason change his mind?
  • Who will Tommy shift into next? Andy?
