THOR Soars at the Box Office

Marvel’s latest film incarnation of a comic book superhero has got Paramount singing praises.

Thor thundered in for a reported $66 million opening weekend in the US, following an international 11-day gross of nearly $176 million. While it’s not the opening weekend performance enjoyed by Iron Man, it’s respectable enough to be considered a success.

This surpasses the Box Office Mojo’s predicted $65 million and puts Thor in the lead for the weekend, over Fast Five and Jumping the Broom.

Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures, which is distributing Thor, says, “Getting people excited for an event is key, and Marvel has done a great job of getting its loyal fan base looking forward to being a part of an opening weekend.”

In a summer that’s about to be crowded with spandex, it’s not a bad start.
