THE WALKING DEAD Adds Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Future Villain

BANNER_News2013
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be the next human villain on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Negan is a major baddie that fans of the Robert Kirkman comics have been waiting to have appear on the series for some time. He is still alive in the current comic books, so he may have a long presence on the show, especially since this season has only managed to get through a few days in Alexandria so far. But it is The Walking Dead, and no one is safe from sudden death or a departure from the comic books, so it’s hard to know for sure. The Hollywood Reporter‘s sources say that Negan will first be seen in the season six finale.

Negan’s language may be a difficulty for the producers since the character is fond of throwing around the f-bomb. This is rather ironic given the high level of zombie violence and gore on the show. It shouldn’t be a major issue if they have to clean up his language. Cursing is a cheap way to show villainy.

Morgan has been on The Good Wife, Grey’s Anatomy, and the second season of Extant with Halle Berry. For some of us, he is best remembered as Sam and Dean’s father, John Winchester, on Supernatural. There’s little chance that he would ever guest star on Supernatural again as his character was killed, sent to Hell, released from Hell and ascended to Heaven. The last time John Winchester was seen as a ghostly apparition he was the young John Winchester, played by Matt Cohen. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also playing Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

How will the hero and romantic interest on Extant and the father of demon hunters and Batman do as a villain on The Walking Dead? He will do a great job. He looks like the character in the comic books and he has a powerful screen presence to make a good counterpoint to the lean mean intensity of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes. He’s going to have to be really dark to be darker than Rick.

What does this mean for whether Glenn is alive or dead at this point? It’s hard to tell. We knew that Negan would be in the television series eventually. Whether they choose to have Glenn meet his fate with Negan, as in the comic books, or be killed falling from a dumpster, it’s hard to say. I’m hoping that Glenn survives both the current situation and the appearance of Negan and Lucille.
