The Geekly with a Twist: October 5th-11th

I think the world might come to an end…this is the second Geekly that I’ve managed to get done early…the second one in a row. Okay, so while you all prepare yourselves for the Apocalypse (something I can help you with!), I hope your week is filled with awesomeness and, of course, your Geekly. Onward with the history!

October 5th, 1952: The one and only Clive Barker is born in Liverpool, England.

October 5th, 1958: Neil deGrasse Tyson (yes, the astrophysicist…did you think I meant another Neil deGrasse Tyson?) is born in New York City.

October 6th, 1950: Award-winning scifi novelist and NASA consultant (he’s got a BoS in astrophysics, hello!) David Brin is born in Glendale, California.

October 6th, 1970: Amy Jo Johnson (yeah, the original Pink Power Ranger!), is born in Dennis, Massachusetts.

October 7th, 1849: In Baltimore, Maryland, a brilliant man and master of horror is lost to the world when Edgar Allan Poe dies at 5 o’clock in the morning.

October 7th, 1979: Twin boys are born in Richmond, British Columbia…the Ashmore twins. While you may not necessarily recognize the last name, you should recognize the roles. Aaron is known for playing Steve Jinks in Warehouse 13 and Jimmy Olsen in Smallville, while Shawn is known for his roles as Iceman in the X-Men movies, Jake in Animorphs (don’t judge, I loved it), and Ged in the 2004 SyFy miniseries Earthsea.

October 8th, 1910: The first man to don the tights and cape as Superman, Kirk Alyn is born in Oxford, New Jersey.

October 8th, 1920: The man behind the literary epic Dune, Frank Herbert is born in Tacoma, Washington.

October 8th, 1970: A designer with Square Enix and one of the men responsible for the character design in Final Fantasy VII (as well as the video game director for Kingdom Hearts), Tetsuya Nomura, is born in Kōchi, Japan.

October 9th, 1954: One of the Captains (Captain Jonathan Archer) as well Sam Beckett in Quantum Leap, Scott Bakula is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

October 11th, 1913: One of the first women in the comic book industry as an editor at DC Comics during the Golden Age (and also the woman who helped create Kryptonite), Dorothy Woolfolk is born in New York City.

October 11th, 1913: Another great in the comic book industry (if he needs more of an introduction, you should really catch up on your names!), Joe Simon is born in Rochester, New York.

October 11th, 1960: The woman who played Peri Brown, a companion of both the Fifth and Sixth Doctors who was the first American character to travel with the Doctor, Nicola Bryant is born in Guildford, Surrey (yes, England).

October 11th, 1969: Stephen Moyer, the man behind Bill Compton (one of the superior vampires in modern popular culture) is born in Brentwood, Essex (again, yes, England).

October 11th, 1972: Aeryn Sun…or at least the actress who brought her to life… Claudia Black is born in Sydney, Australia.

October 11th, 1985: 1985 The key herself (that is, the woman behind Dawn Summers from Buffy), Michelle Trachtenberg is born in New York City.

For more awesome (geeky) stuff that happened this week in history, check out:

And now, in honor of Miss Woolfolk and Mister Alyn, how about a Kryptonite for your Twist?

  • 1 part melon liqueur (if it’s not green, find another one!)
  • 1 part coconut rum
  • 1 part spiced rum
  • 1 part pineapple juice
  • a splash of vodka

Shake all ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into a prepared chilled glass. I personally love this one in a highball with some plastic ice cubes (I’m not keen on diluting this one too much…it’s too yummy!). Mini green glow sticks make it especially awesome, and make great garnishes.

And, of course we need a Garnish here and, if you haven’t seen this yet, you’re living under a rock (and not watching my Twitter Feed)…

So, until next week (if I manage to get ANOTHER one ready early, you KNOW those Apocalypse drinks will come in handy), geek on!
