The Geekly with a Twist: March 9th-15th

That day is finally here…that’s right, it’s that day before a lovely weekend…Geekly day!  Okay, well, you know, it’s the last day of the work week too, but doesn’t it just make your day so much better to know that you’re not only finishing up your week but also enjoying a bit of awesomeness that is The Geekly with a Twist?  So, without stalling, onward with the history!

March 10th, 1876: Alexander Graham Bell makes the first successful telephone call.  The first words transmitted in this way? “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.”

March 10th, 194o: Myths of his birth range from choosing to be born to punching his way out, but it still stands that he who is Chuck Norris is born in Ryan, Oklahoma.

March 11th, 1989: In Leningrad, USSR (now again St. Petersburg, Russia), a new Chekov is born for the legions of Trekkies.  Anton Yelchin has since not only been involved in the Trek franchise, but also the Terminator franchise and Fright Night.

March 13th, 1781: The butt of most solar system jokes (no pun intended), Uranus is discovered by Sir William Herschel.

March 13th , 1930: The discovery of Pluto is announced to the Harvard College observatory.

March 14th, 1879: The international symbol for quirky genius, Albert Einstein is born in Ulm, which was then a part of the German Empire (obviously, modern-day Germany).

March 14th, 1933: A brilliant actor known largely in geek circles as the latest incarnation of Alfred in the Batman reboot, Michael Caine is born in London, England.  Bonus fact!  His birth name is Maurice Joseph Micklewhite.

March 14th, 1995: Aboard the spacecraft Soyuz TM-21, Norman Thargard becomes the first American to enter space aboard a Russian craft.

March 15th, 44 BC–  Julius Caesar is murdered by several of his top ranking senators…hello Ides of March!  E tu Brute!

For a bit of a Twist, let’s feel a bit Greek in honor of the general’s death with a simple Bloody Caesar.

  • 1 to 2 oz of Vodka (to strength preference)
  • Clamato Juice
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Hot Sauce (similar to Tabasco)
  • Celery Salt
  • A wedge of lime

Rim a pint glass with celery salt and fill it with ice.  Pour about 2-3 shakes of Worcestershire sauce over the ice followed by the hot sauce (to taste).  Add the vodka, then fill the glass with the Clamato juice.  Mix with either a stirrer or a stalk of celery, garnish with a squeeze of lime juice and a sword stabbed through the limey bit!  Enjoy!

And, of course, for the Garnish, I HAVE to share this little tidbit that came through the internet via the Capitol…

Aaaaand, there’s even more clips coming around!  Anyone else counting down until March 23rd?

Yup, I’m happy dancing.  Well, I must get going so, until next week, geek on!
