The Geekly with a Twist: July 22nd-28th
Annaleigh back again for another addition of This Week in Geek History to be furthermore known as The Geekly with a Twist! (I’m still open to comments on that name…do you like the change?)

July 22nd, 2000: Researchers at the University of Arizona announced their discovery of Jupiter’s 17th moon. Later designated Callirrhoe after another of Jupiter the god’s conquests, you realize just how messed up mythology can be as they’ve not run out of names yet.
July 23rd 1970: Actress Charisma Carpenter, the beautiful Buffy and Angel alum, is born in Las Vegas.
July 23rd, 1972: The US launched Landsat 1 (aka ERTS-1), it was the first satellite launched intended to research Earth and its landmasses.
July 23rd, 1998: Scientists at the University of Hawaii produce more than 50 mice using a cloning technique.
July 24th 1951: The inspirational future Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, is born in Phoenix, Arizona.
July 24th, 1969: Astronauts ending the Apollo 11 mission crash land safely in the Pacific Ocean.
July 24th, 1982: A future bloodsucker and mutation sucker (a la Rogue), Anna Paquin, is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba (that’s in Canada, folks…I worry about you if you didn’t know that).
July 25th, 1978: The first “test tube baby,” Louise Joy Brown, is born in Oldham, England.
July 25th, 1984: In a small step for woman but a giant leap for womankind, Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya becomes the first woman to walk in space. She was aboard the orbiting space station Salyut 7.
July 26th, 1928: Film legend and mastermind Stanley Kubrick is born to thoroughly unsuspecting parents in Manhattan.
July 26th, 1971: Apollo 15 is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida.
July 26th, 1973: Another future bloodsucker noted for kicking butts and taking no care in names, Kate Beckinsale, is born in London, England.
July 27th, 1999: The U.S. space shuttle Discovery completes a 5 day mission as commanded by Air Force Col. Eileen Collins. This is the first time a shuttle has been commanded by a woman.
July 27th, 2003: The BBC tries to finally get cryptozoology fiends to hush up when it reports that there is truly no Loch Ness monster. Personally, I think they were just being nay-sayers…Nessie‘s too cool not to be real!
July 28th, 2006: Researchers announce the discovery of two ancient reptiles in Australia- the Umoonasaurus and the Opallionectes. Besides having wicked names, these reptiles look oddly similar to a certain creature dismissed by the BBC.
Aaaaaaannnd the Twist!
This weeks cocktail is in honor of the lovely Anna Paquin and comes as a courtesy from our friends over at HBO.
Blood and Sand
1 part Glenfiddich 12-year-old single malt whiskey (or comparable whiskey)
1 part orange juice (fresh squeezed, if available)
1 part Cherry Heering (You can also use cherry brandy as I know Cherry Heering can be hard to find. -AJ)
1 part sweet Italian vermouth
Orange peel
Pour ingredients over ice and shake in a martini shaker. Serve neat in a chilled martini glass or on the rocks with a twist.
