The Geekly with a Twist: February 17th-23rd

Hello everyone!  I hope you all had a good discount candy day and an awesome week and are more than ready to enjoy your extended weekend (and yeah, I’m rubbing it in a little…I’m totally not used to having holidays with the Federal Reserve!).  So, without too much stalling since I’m already behind…onward with the history!

February 18th, 1930: Pluto is discovered by Clyde Tombaugh as a result of photographs taken in January of the same year.

February 19th, 1473: The great Renaissance astronomer and mathematician who changed the face of astronomy with his heliocentric theory, Nicolas Copernicus is born in modern-day northern Poland.

February 19th, 1986: The Mir space station is launched by the Soviet Union.

February 20th, 1965:Ranger 8 crashes into the moon as planned, but not before sending thousands of pictures back to Earth.

February 21st, 1946: A man who would go on to be a household name (unless you live in a CAVE!), Alan Rickman (Severus Snape, among other things in case you do live in a cave) is born in London, England.

February 22nd, 1997: Dolly, the sheep cloned in Scotland by scientists Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell, and their associates has her existence announced to the world.  Dolly is the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell.

So, for your weekly Twist, how about an experience known as Sunrise on Pluto?  This comes from one of my favorite cocktail books, The Daily Cocktail: 365 Intoxicating Drinks and the Outrageous Events that Inspired Them.

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Tequila
  • 1/2 oz blue curacao
  • Lemonade
  • A dash of grenadine

Layer the alcohols in highball glass.  Fill with lemonade and top with the grenadine.  Enjoy!

And, of course, we need to finish the week up with a good Garnish!  This week I’ve spent a lot of time just wasting my time on a hilarious webcomic known as xkcd

Along with being incredibly funny and a great waste of time, the brilliantly simplistic collection serves as an excellent geekometer!  🙂  Test your friends…let’s see how geeky they REALLY are!  Muahahaha.

Okay, grand delusions aside…go check it out and tell ’em AJ sent ya.

So, until next week…geek on!
