SUPERMAN: First Images of the Man of Steel

On the heels of the announcement that Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Daily Planet editor Perry White, Hollywood News has this first image of Henry Cavill as Superman:

Analysis: It’s clear that Warner Brothers wants to allay some concerns about this movie, given that Zach Snyder’s last film, Sucker Punch, under-performed at the box office. This image is clearly geared toward anyone who’s worried that the movie is going to be a talky origin story with no action.

What we notice at first glance:

1. This is not the suit from Superman Returns. While it’s got some kind of texture, it doesn’t look like there are little logos all over the costume. Could this be some sort of Kryptonian mesh? It appears that it follows the classic design of the suit instead of the DCnU version coming out this fall.

2. There is no spit-curl. What’s up with that?

3. Given what we’ve heard about the villains in the story, this could be a scene from early in the movie. Perhaps when Superman first makes an appearance. Following in the tradition of Superman The Movie and Superman Returns, there’s seems to be a requirement for a “stopping criminals” montage. This could be part of that. The bank vault door behind our hero may suggest that he’s foiling a robbery?

4. The lighting and color scheme looks a bit like Captain America, indicating that it’s not going to be too stylized and hyper-real, but more of a realistic tone, probably a result of Christopher Nolan’s involvement. It looks like it could fit into the same universe Batman occupies.

But that’s a lot of speculation for just one image. We’ll have to see just how this progresses.

    • Actually, the film is currently shooting in and around Chicago, so it’s possible this is from an early scene they’ve shot. It’s also possible that this is simply a promotional photo to show off Cavill in the suit.
