STARMAN Gets a Remake

BANNER_News2013

The Tracking Board reports that Starman, another John Carpenter classic, is getting the remake treatment from Sony’s Columbia Pictures division.

The original sci-fi romance from 1984 starred Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen in a story about an alien who comes to Earth after getting the invitation sent with the Voyager 2 space probe. After his craft is shot down, he meets a widow named Jenny Hayden and takes on the form of her late husband in order to learn about humanity.

Bridges won Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal, and critics warmed to the blend of science fiction and romance.

The movie spawned a short-lived television series starring Robert Hays in the lead role. The show followed the “Starman” and his son, Scott Hayden, as they search for Scott’s mother fourteen years after the alien’s first visit to Earth.

According to the report, however, this will not be a straight remake, but will hew closer to the tone of films like The Fault in Our Stars. Adam North will produce for Sony/Columbia, with original producer Michael Douglas (yes, that Michael Douglas) returning to produce under his Further Films production banner.

No word on whether original director John Carpenter would return in some capacity.
