OK. Star Wars Rebels is officially squandering its opportunities here. In the season right before the release of Rogue One, you’d think there would be more connections being made between the show and the thing what happens right after the show. But it’s almost as if the Story Group told the Rebels writers “hands off” this season. The result: filler episodes.

I’m starting to not wonder why Gary Whitta didn’t write the final version of The Force Awakens. His plots don’t move. They seem functional enough, but they don’t do anything.

This week, the crew of the Ghost meets up with Hondo Ohnaka (Jim Cummings) and Azmorigan (James Hong) to retrieve proton bombs from an Imperial transport that’s been caught in a weather maelstrom of some sort on a planet of some sort. The details weren’t that significant. Turns out there’s also a treasure on the ship, and our pirate friends already tried to steal the ship once without success. The casualty of this attempt is Melch (Dee Bradley Baker), an Ugnaught left behind the first time around.

Hera (Vanessa Marshall), recognizing that the Rebellion can’t afford to be choosy, sends the crew to recover the proton bombs, because they’re going to come in handy. She puts Zeb (Steve Blum) in charge of the operation, thoroughly irritating Ezra (Taylor Gray), who brought Hondo’s “opportunity” to the crew in the first place.

Jedi Finders Keepers?

Once on board, it becomes a pretty straightforward salvage job with a ticking clock. Chopper maintains the transport’s stabilizers while Zeb and the gang hoist cargo by winch cable to the Ghost, all the while fighting dangerous high-velocity winds.

Make a note: dangerous high velocity winds.

The mission is compromised when Azmorigan somehow awakens the sentry droid. Which leads to a shootout with a lot of sentry droids. In the midst of this, Zeb is trying to get the proton bombs over to the Ghost in the high velocity winds, and Hondo is fighting with Azmorigan over the treasure. They finally get to the last of the cargo, jumping on board the proton bombs which are magnetically attached to a pully moving upwards in the middle of high velocity winds.

These high velocity winds have no effect on Chopper’s flight. No effect on the winch cables. No effect on the cargo being moved from one ship to the other. Even though these same winds are wreaking havoc with Hera’s ability to stay close to the transport long enough to salvage the cargo.

Come on, guys. Physics…

Star Wars Rebels airs Saturday nights at 8:30/7:30c on Disney XD.
