Jones’ character, Starfleet Science Officer Lt. Saru, will introduce a new alien species to the Star Trek universe. The actor is no stranger to genre films, which include Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and his portrayal of the Silver Surfer in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Rapp will play an astromycologist (fungus expert) and Starfleet Science Officer on the Starship Discovery. He originated the role of Mark in the Tony award-winning Broadway musical Rent, reprising his role on the big screen. He recently was on Cinemax’s The Knick.

They join Yeoh, who has been confirmed as Captain Georgiou on the Starship Shenzhou. She is best known for her role in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Early speculation was that her character would be Captain Han Bo. This proves not to be the case.

Discovery is the first new television series in the Star Trek universe since Enterprise, which ended its four-season run in 2005. It features a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that has inspired generations. Other roles will include an openly gay actor as a male lead, a female admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male admiral, a male adviser, and a British male doctor.

It will be produced by CBS Television Studios and was intended to be the first original series exclusive to streaming service on CBS All Access. However, due to delays and changes to the creative team, The Good Wife spinoff, The Good Fight, moved into Discovery’s original February 2017 premiere. It will now premiere in May 2017.

Executive producer Brian Fuller stepped down as the showrunner in October, handing over the day-to-day operations to fellow executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Haberts. They are joined by Alex Kurtzman, Roddenberry Entertainment, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.
