SciFi4Me Guide to Summer TV – Hottest Genre Shows and Where to Find Them

Gone are the days when the only things on TV during the summer were soap operas and reruns. Networks fully embraced the idea of a year-long programming. And while cable networks seem to be ahead of the curve with many more successful summer shows, the big networks don’t want to be left behind. The result? Some real gems and stories told over no more than 13 episodes.

Sci-fi and fantasy shows (and movies) thrive during summer when they don’t have to fight against the highly popular mainstream shows. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive list of all the geek/nerdy shows available in the upcoming months.

BBC America

Orphan Blackstarring Tatiana Maslany in a number of roles, will end its second season on June 21st. Check out our recaps of the shows.

CBS

Under the Dome returns with its second season on June 30th, with author Stephen King penning the premiere episode.

The CW

Beauty and the Beast returns will all new episodes on June 2nd to finish its second season. The show was already picked up for season 3 and we will continue to provide you with episode recaps.

The 100 will end its freshman run on June 11th and will return with season 2 in the fall, following Arrow.

FOX

Cosmos finale will air on June 8th. Make sure to check out Notes from the Cosmic Shore with Heather French and Timothy Harvey discussing all the great episodes.

FX

The Strain, a vampire horrow show created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, will premiere on July 13th.

HBO

Game of Thrones will wrap up its fourth season on June 15th. The show has already been picked up for two more seasons, with season 5 production kicking off soon.

True Blood comes back on June 22nd with its seventh and final season. Check out our previous coverage of the show.

Lifetime

The Witches of East End returns for a 13 episodes second season on July 6th.

MTV

Teen Wolf premieres with season 4 on June 23rd. The season has been promoted with a tagline “Can’t Go Back”. Watch the shows teaser trailer.

Netflix

Hemlock Grove will premiere its second season on July 11th with new faces joining the show.

Science

Through the Wormhole returns with its season 5 on June 4th. Amongst the topics covered this time around are gravity, time, superpowers and zobie apocalypse. 8 new episodes will air till July 23. Watch Morgan Freeman promote the show while talking on helium.

Showtime

Penny Dreadful, a horror show, based on several public domains characters, will air its final episode on June 29th.

Starz

Outlander, a show about a nurse Claire Randall who time-travels to 18th century Scotland, will premiere on August 9th.

SyFy

Defiance season 2 will premiere on June 19th. What fans are most excited about is the appearance of Linda Hamilton, who will play Rafe McCawley’s ex-wife.

Dominion, a show based on the 2010 film Legion, will premiere on June 19th. The show stars Chris Egan (The KIngs) with Alan Dale and Anthony Head amongst others.

Continuum will air its season 3 finale on June 27th. As of right now, there have been no word on whether or not the show will be picked up for another season.

TNT

The Last Ship, based on a novel of the same name by William Brinkley, will premiere on June 22nd. After a pandemic kills 80% of the world’s population, the crew of an unaffected U.S. Navy ship must try to find a cure to save humanity. Michael Bay serves as one of the shows executive producers.

Falling Skies, starring Noah Wyle, returns with its fourth season on June 22nd. Check out our previous coverage of the show.
