Roundup: Summer Begins at Syfy

Syfy is about to ramp up for the summer, and despite so many complaints that the network has abandoned the core base of science fiction fans, the Monday night line-up is all genre, starting this Monday July 11:

MONDAY

EUREKAPoptimal has this Q&A with stars Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, in which they describe what’s in store for the genius town through season 4.5 and beyond. Ferguson calls it a “fantastically complex plot” that will definitely twist everything.

WAREHOUSE 13 –New episodes return with a new partner for Pete (even though it’s a sure bet Myka’s coming back at some point).

The show also has a web series on Syfy.com: “Of Monsters and Men” will be a 10-part story on the site. If you can get past the more obvious product placement by Toyota, you may enjoy it.

ALPHAS – the newest entry in the “Heroes” mold of shows. Executive producer Ira Steven Behr says it’s not kid stuff, and is more suited to its later time slot because it tends to be a bit darker than the rest of the Monday night line-up.

Created by Zak Penn, “Alphas” will follow five ordinary humans who develop extraordinary powers and end up working for the Department of Defense. Think “Heroes: Homeland Security”, maybe. It’s an ensemble show with producers who are no strangers to science fiction. Besides Behr and Penn, the show boasts Robert Hewitt Wolfe as one of the show-runners.

HAVEN returns July 15. Based on “The Colorado Kid” by Stephen King, this show’s been below the radar for many.

In the meantime, second season production on BEING HUMAN will likely begin soon. Former “Dollhouse” cast member Dichen Lachman has joined the cast as Izumi, “an ancient reclusive vampire who returns to Boston and immediately causes issues for Aidan” and the other vampires.

We posted this on our Facebook page a while back, but here’s a bit more detail on the new Defiance project from Syfy and Trion. Rockne S. O’Bannon (“Farscape”) will be writing the TV side of this series/video game cross-over. Looks like demos will debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo next June 7. We’re definitely keeping an eye on this.

  • I watched “Alphas” last night and enjoyed it. At least it was full of action and had some CGI, which I like. 🙂 I thought the ensemble cast worked together better from the start than a lot of other SyFy shows I have seen. I may try to get into their Friday Comic Con panel if I can’t get into the BBC America “Bedlam” premiere.
