Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the launch of PlayStation Productions. Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden and Asad Qizilbash spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Sony’s new studio.
PlayStation Productions will use existing PlayStation IP for creating movies and television. “Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves,” said Qizilbash.

PlayStation has consistently produced critically acclaimed exclusives for all its consoles. “We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories,” said Layden. “We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum.”
[Photo Courtesy of Sony Interactive Studios]Qizilbash said Sony has spent the last few years gaining an understanding of the film and TV industry. “We looked at what Marvel has done in taking the world of comic books and making it into the biggest thing in the film world,” says Layden. “It would be a lofty goal to say we’re following in their footsteps, but certainly we’re taking inspiration from that.”
There is no word on what projects they are starting with, but PlayStation Productions are working on several projects. Sony Pictures has also partnered with PlayStation Productions to help with the distribution of projects.
With franchises like God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Horizon: Zero Dawn and so many more; PlayStation will have no shortage of games to bring to new mediums.
