New Footage from "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." [UPDATED]

UPDATE: Here’s the promo that ran during Once Upon a Time:

The chase scene: French flag in the background behind the motorcycle. Is part of this taking place overseas? It’s consistent with Coulson’s comment that this is worldwide. And more evidence the main action will stage out of California: the license plate on Lola.

Tonight, we get a first trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the season finale of Once Upon a Time, but in the meantime, there’s a really quick teaser over on the show’s YouTube channel. The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division is back!

So, some analysis on this.

First shot out of the gate, and we get super-powers. The show will have them, even if the main team doesn’t (but that could change, couldn’t it?). This burning building raises some questions — most notably who’s being rescued and who’s doing the rescuing. Some have noted that this bears a passing resemblance to J. August Richards, and maybe he might be playing Luke Cage. However, a small niggle with this theory is that Cage was based in New York, not California (more on that in a moment). But if it is Luke Cage, does that open the door for a Heroes for Hire back-door pilot at some point? Or will the Defenders make an appearance?

Here’s Chloe Bennett as Skye, who becomes the hacker-girl in the show. Possibly she’s being questioned in this scene, as it looks like an interrogation room and she doesn’t look like the one asking questions. Just from the look of this, I’d say she’s going to be the smart-aleck who flirts and whatnot to throw others off balance. The ring on the chain around her neck could prove significant as well. Remember, Whedon doesn’t have accidents. (Well, we won’t talk about Wash…)

Ming-Na gets to be the action hero in this. And it looks like she’s busting the chops of a cop. Maybe. When is a cop not a cop?

The same S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles as we saw in The Avengers, clearly making it part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (if there was still any lingering question…). The building in the back is US First Loan & Savings, which might or might not be significant. But note the California state flag hanging from the building. At least this episode is not in New York. So if it’s in California — which is where Malibu sits — might we get a mention about the events in Iron Man 3?

It’s a burned-out building. Perhaps the bank? Looks like one of those internal automated teller alcove in the back on the right. And the zippy-zoom device in the foreground — Stark Technology? Some kind of probe, most likely. But whose?

This is our other field agent, Grant Ward (played by Brett Dalton), and it appears he’s fighting the same chap in the cop uniform who fought Agent May.

His first name is Agent.

The Twitter hashtag is #CoulsonLives, and the show is embracing that with gusto, including it in the teaser. Either Whedon and Company will explain this very quickly, or Coulson will be The Impossible Agent and we’ll have a mystery to unravel over the course of a season (or two). Note it appears that he’s in a police station. Lots of uniforms behind him.
