Netflix Announces New Original Animated Series

It’s no secret that Netflix has had a slew of original content over the last several years, from cultural sensations like Birdbox to hit anime adaptations like Devilman Crybaby and Seven Deadly Sins, they’ve certainly proven that their originals are no laughing matter.

Netflix is continuing their trend of high quality original content, announcing the development of a Magic: The Gathering animated series. Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels) and Jose Molina (The Tick) will write, while Anthony and Joseph Russo will executive produce. The title is set to be animated by Octopie, the animation studio that worked on the YouTube Red series Paranormal Action Squad. Magic: The Gathering is currently owned by Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro. WOTC and Hasbro’s Allspark Animation are also partners in the new series.

The Russos say that the plot of this series will “oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories” of the Planeswalkers, some of the most powerful beings of the Magic: The Gathering universe. No release date has been given for this project yet, but Isaac Krauss, CEO of the animation studio Octopie, did promise that they have “lofty ambitions” for the animation of the series, which could indicate that they’re very early in the development with this project.

This is not the only project Netflix announced, though. They also announced a new Dreamworks Animated series. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, an animated, family friendly action-adventure series, is set to debut in 2020. This is part of Netflix’s multi-year agreement with Dreamworks to create “family friendly” animation, and is to be set within the same timeline as Jurassic World. Whether this means the animation will be canon or not is another matter, but it’s always good to see large IP’s expand into new territory via spinoff content like this.

In addition to these additions to their animation portfolio, they also have several continuations to some of their anime originals lined up, like Kakegurui season 2, Aggretsuko season 2, and even a second season of Forest of Piano. Additionally, we still have the Netflix remakes of Saint Seiya, Ghost in the Shell, and even an adaptation of 7 Seeds to look forward to, as well as the previously announced Dragon’s Dogma and Devil May Cry animated series.

No story details or release dates on the new projects.
