On January 13th, 2017 The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be getting a reboot movie based on Shuki Levy and Haim Saban’s show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The new movie will be directed by Dean Israelite who also directed the time travel thriller Project Almanac. Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who are co-writing the new fantasy movie The Last Witch Hunter, turned in the early draft of the script. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, X-Men: First ClassThor) will be working on the screenplay.

Now we have more details on the team.

We have now received word that Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Zack will be the Rangers just like in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, there is no word on who will be cast as our main characters, but here’s hoping the original Rangers make cameos, but we did character descriptions for each of our Rangers.

Jason Scott (Red Ranger) a 17-year-old star athlete of the football team until one night when we gets into a terrible car accident and he has to rebuild his whole identity because of the traumatic experience. Jason in the show was good at sports but he was never the star and he never had a traumatic car accident so that’s something new.

Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger) a 17-year-old girl who was in the popular crowd, but then decided to rebel and leave school for six months. Now she is back with a more rebellious edge and she doesn’t want to be one of the popular girls like she was, but she is now popular for not being popular like she was.  This is a big departure from the valley girl type girl Kimberly was in the show.

Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger) a 17-year-old nerdy guy who is really smart but very odd and socially inept. He is a genuine and kind guy who has OCD and loves to invent. He doesn’t have many friends and tries to help Jason as a friend after the accident. Billy in the show pretty much had the same traits.

Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger) a 17-year-old smart girl who always has to move because her parents’ jobs. She is always the new girl in school and is looking for a group to accept and love her. Trini in the show was very smart and always cared about her friends.

Zack Taylor (Black Ranger)  a 17-year-old is a confident self absorbed athlete who only looks out for himself and thus provides a direct foil for Jason. He is a ladies’ man and is the life of the party. He doesn’t want anyone to know that he and his single mom live in a trailer park because that would ruin his reputation. Zack in the show was never like this, I mean he was a good athlete but he was a team player and he actually had a bit of trouble with girls in a few episodes.

One big character they are missing is Tommy, the sixth Ranger, who originally is turned evil by Rita Repulsa and gets the evil Green Ranger powers. Tommy appears in the “Green with Evil” story line, where he fights the Rangers under Rita’s command. Tommy gets free of Rita’s control and becomes the Green Ranger to fight with the other rangers.

Due to the fact that his powers were evil from the start he began to start losing his powers the more he used them, as he was working for the Rangers and not Rita. He eventually loses his powers and is out of commission for a while, but is selected to rejoin and lead the Rangers as the White Ranger after Zordon, their mentor, and Alpha 5, his robot sidekick, find the White Ranger power. After Tommy accepts the title as the White Ranger, he became the leader of the team instead of the Red Ranger.

Tommy is an important character because he struggles with the events that happened when he was evil and wants some sort of forgiveness and redemption for it. He also struggles with feeling inadequate when compared to his other team members as he’s losing his green powers. Tommy comes back stronger than ever as the White Ranger, maybe because he doesn’t want to take his powers for granted and knows he may only have them for a while and wants to make the most out of it. Tommy is one of the most popular Rangers amongst fans and has been in the most episodes of Power Rangers. He went on to also lead Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers Turbo both as the Red Ranger. He was the mentor and the Black Ranger of Power Rangers Dino Thunder.

I think if they are going for a franchise of movies based on this team of Rangers, we should have them fight Rita or one of her monsters and at the end we see her working on her spell to turn Tommy evil and maybe show a glimpse of him in his Green Ranger outfit. We could have the “Green with Evil” arc as the basis for the second movie.
