The movie adaptation of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid video game now has a writer: Jay Basu. He’ll be writing the screenplay for Sony Pictures, which is producing the flick along with Avi and Ari Arad and production president Michael De Luca. Jordon Vogt-Roberts will direct.

Originally released in 1998 on the PlayStation platform, the game follows a soldier named Solid Snake, who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to defeat a terrorist threat from a renegade special forces unit designated “Foxhound”. Snake is tasked with rescuing two hostages, neutralizing the terrorists and preventing a nuclear strike.

The game was created by Hideo Kojima and has spawned several sequel games. Considered by many to be one of the more influential games of its day, it helped launch the “stealth genre” and shipped more than six million copies worldwide. Spinoff material also includes comics, novels, and a radio drama.
