MAN OF STEEL 2 Adds Cyborg, As Predicted

As we predicted many weeks ago, Warner Brothers has announced the addition of Cyborg to the growing roster of characters in Man of Steel 2.

Theatre actor Ray Fisher has been chosen to portray Victor Stone in the new film, which has been popularly referred to as Batman Vs. Superman, and will introduce Ben Affleck as an older Batman/Bruce Wayne. The story, still the subject of wild speculation and rumor, has only been teased with a reading of a page from The Dark Knight Returns at San Diego Comic Con.

Fisher has a very limited track record in film, and is probably best known (if he’s known at all) for his on-stage portrayal of Muhammad Ali in Fetch Clay, Make Man by Will Powers at New York Theater Workshop in New York City.

Cyborg, for those not familiar, is a teenage football sensation Victor Stone, whose parents were scientists at S.T.A.R. Labs. Created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez as part of The New Teen Titans, he first appeared in DC Comics Presents #26 in 1980. He was also added to the roster of the Super Friends in The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians, in which the character was voiced by Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson.

The New 52 version of the character has him as a founding member of the Justice League, and his origin is featured in both the first story arc of New 52 Justice League and the animated adaptation Justice League: War.

In a behind-the-scenes feature on the Man of Steel home video, Henry Cavill mentions the potential for S.T.A.R. Labs and Cyborg that could one day make an appearance in this new cinematic universe. This follows Cavill also mentioning Batman before the announcement that Affleck would join the cast of the sequel.

Set to be released May 6, 2016 — assuming WB doesn’t move it away from Captain America 3 — the film stars Henry Cavill as Kal-El, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana/Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, and will likely lead into a Justice League movie. Directed by Zach Snyder from a script by Chris Terrio doing a polish of a story by Snyder and David S. Goyer.

Jason P. Hunt (founder/EIC) is the author of the sci-fi novella "The Hero At the End Of His Rope". His short film "Species Felis Dominarus" was a finalist in the Sci Fi Channel's 2007 Exposure competition.
