The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America has named author Lois McMaster Bujold as the 36th Damon Knight Grand Master for her work in science fiction and fantasy literature.

The announcement was made earlier this week on the SFWA website, where organization president Mary Robinette Kowal wrote, “Lois McMaster Bujold has had an undeniable influence on the field of science- fiction and fantasy. From the the Vorkosigan Saga, to the Chalion series and the Sharing Knife series, she finds new ways to explore the genre, mixing and matching everything from regency to science fiction. With dozens of books in multiple languages, while continuing to write, she is one of the most prolific authors working today.”

Bujold has won the Hugo award four times, and she’s also won the Nebula Award, the Mythopoeic Award for Adult Literature, the Skylark Award, and has additional nominations for the World Fantasy Award, the Prometheus Award, and the Campbell Award for best new writer.

She’s a self-described “voracious reader”, and she began writing in junior high. Her first professional sale was a short story in Twilight Zone Magazine. During that time, her first three novels — Shards of HonorThe Warrior’s Apprentice, and Ethan of Athos — were all bought and published by Baen Books, hitting the shelves in 1986.

Her most recognizable work falls into three book series: the Vorkosigan Saga, the Chalion series, and the Sharing Knife series.
