LITTLE WOMEN Meets a Dystopian Reality
Deadline reports that the CW has is developing a new version of Little Women, written by Alexis Jolly.
The show will be produced by Jolly and Michael Weatherly, and is a “hyper stylized, gritty adaptation of the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott.” It will follow the sisters in a dystopian world in which they try to decipher conspiracies that go beyond anything they have ever imagined.
Little Women has had several adaptations, including a film starring Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Kirsten Dunst, and Christian Bale. The story was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, and it centers around four sisters and their lives in the 1800s. Based loosely on Alcott’s own life, it was a commercial and critical success that led to subsequent works Little Men and Jo’s Boys.
Alcott, however, considered Little Women “moral pap for the young” as she grew older, and her darker, more adult stories (written under the pseudonym A.M. Barnard) have fallen by the wayside. Would she appreciate a grittier Little Women that more closely resembled her own life? Hard to say, but if the CW picks up the series we’ll get to see a darker side to the March sisters.
