Yesterday Twentieth Century Fox announced that Trevante Rhodes was joining the cast of Shane Black’s reboot of The Predator. Today it was announced that Keegan-Michael Key has signed on as a character vaguely described as “a man who teams up with [Boyd] Holbrook and Rhodes to fight the creatures.”

headshot_keeganmichaelkeyThe Key and Peele comedian joins the impressive cast of Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook (who replaced Benicio del Toro last fall due to schedule conflicts), and Olivia Munn in what Black considers a soft reboot. The Predator will be a sequel to the original franchise, with stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and later Danny Glover fighting the extra-terrestrial monster.

Details of the film are not known. Rumor from The Hollywood Reporter states the action will take place in the suburbs, even though Black officially denied it last fall. Producer Jon Davis did say, “The writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you, you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’”

Black is directing a script penned by Fred Dekker, John Davis, Joel Silver, and Lawrence Gordon, who produced the original movie.

While Key is best known for his Comedy Central sketch show Key and Peele with Jordan Peele, his first major film role was in Tomorrowland. He also starred in Mike Birbiglia’s comedy Don’t Think Twice and the James Franco-Bryan Cranston comedy Why Him? His next leading role is in Joe Swanber’s Win It All.

Filming for The Predator starts in February with a March 2018 release.
