The movie that happened so quickly you almost missed it now has a release date.

Jem and the Holograms, announced with fanfare just five weeks before the beginning of principal photography, will hit theaters October 23, 2015. The Universal movie, based on the Hasbro animated series that ran from 1985-1988, follows a young woman who finds pop stardom with the help of her best friends and a pair of high-tech earrings. Cast includes Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Juliette Lewis, and Molly Ringwald. Jon M. Chu is directing from a screenplay by Ryan Landels.

Chu, who’s probably best known for his work on the second G.I. Joe, is also producing along with Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, Scooter Braun for SB Projects, Bennett Schneir, and Hasbro Studios’ Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis.

The production has been soliciting creative participation from the general public, getting fan opinions on wardrobe, set designs, music, and other aspects of the production. There has been a strong social media aspect to the process, using the hashtag #JemTheMovie. The main web site for the film is a Tumblr page where fans can share their art, music, opinions, and more.

Some have made the observation that this movie sounds a lot like Josie and the Pussycats (2001), which was also a Universal production based on an animated property. In this case, Josie & the Pussycats were originally part of Archie Comics, and the film was considered a box office bomb. The movie starred Rachael Leigh Cook (Psych), Tara Reid (Sharknado), and Rosario Dawson (Daredevil).
