20th Century Fox has released the first full trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 action flick from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin.
Reprising their roles from the original are Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner. And while Will Smith isn’t back as Captain Steven Hiller, Jessie Usher is all set to take over for him as all-grown-up Dylan Hiller (originally played by Ross Bagley of The Little Rascals). Maika Monroe replaces Mae Whitman as President Whitmore’s daughter, Patricia, and Sela Ward plays current President Lanford.
Earth’s defensive technology looks to have gotten a severe upgrade, using the technology left behind by the invaders the first time they attacked. Now, it appears an even greater threat is about to arrive.
According to the web site dedicated to the War of 1996, Hiller was killed testing the first tech hybrid fighter plane. Of course, the “inside baseball” reason Hiller isn’t in the sequel is because according to Emmerich, Will Smith declined a return, saying he wasn’t interested in another sequel. Smith may have soured on science fiction after the poor performance of After Earth. (Smith is currently starring in Concussion.) The web site also reveals the existence of an enclave of alien survivors living in the Congo region of Africa, the survivors of a ship crash.
20th Century Fox also released a promotional video for the new web site, featuring Goldblum in character, narrating the spot encouraging people to visit and explore the historical timeline, which includes a moon base and several pieces of technology dispersed throughout the solar system as part of the Earth Space Defense.
Independence Day: Resurgance will be in theaters June 24, 2016.
