Netflix has finished its casting for their Lost in Space reinvention. Ignacio Serricchio will portray Don West, joining Toby Stephens, Molly Parker and Parker Posey.

headshot_ignacioserricchioWest was originally played by Mark Goddard in the 1965-1968 CBS television series and was the straight-arrow military man whose character became lost behind the treacherous Dr. Smith, Will Robinson, and the Robot. This time around, the character is receiving a makeover as a rough and tumble flyboy who has a side gig as a smuggler specializing in luxury goods.

Loosely based on Swiss Family Robinson, the show is about a family of deep-space colonists who become stranded after their ship, the Jupiter 2, is sabotaged and thrown off course. The original series, created by Irwin Allen, took place in 1997 and became a cult sensation, considered one of the most popular pieces of popular science fiction created in the last 50 years.

However, with the new Don West and the casting of Parker Posey as a female Dr. Smith, it appears that Netflix is using the old Lost in Space as only a loose guide for a new edgier adaptation, moving away from the original show’s campiness.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter) are penning the show with Zack Estrin (Prison Break), Kevin Burns (The Curse of Oak Island, Ancient Aliens), Jon Jashnin (Godzilla, Pacific Rim), Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, Hannibal, The Descent) and Marc Helwig of Legendary TV-based Applebox as executive producers. Marshall will also serve as producing director and direct several episodes.

Serricchio was a lead on Brandy Norwood’s series Zoe Ever After and currently has reoccurring roles on Bones and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. He has also been seen in The Witches of East End and The Young and the Restless.

The 10-episode first season will premiere on Netflix in 2018.
