Hulu Adds To Their Marvel-ous Lineup

Hulu is out to rival the new Disney+ streaming service with the additions of two new live action Marvel shows. They have announced Marvel’s Ghost Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom will be joining their 2020 line up.

This version of Ghost Rider will continue to follow Robbie Reyes, who was introduced on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Reyes is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Living in south Texas, when he unleashes the Rider, he brings vengeance for the innocents but struggles to control his power.

Gabriel Luna will return as the fiery character; however, sources have stated that the show will be a completely different version of Reyes which is not tied to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. storyline. While Agents announced Tuesday the return of its sixth season in May, there was a speculation of Reyes’ return for the final season fueled by Luna’s cryptic Twitter post. However, it now appears he was hinting at the Hulu show. But as fans have learned over the years, nothing is impossible with Marvel.

The series will be executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, Paul Zbyszewski, and Jeph Loeb.

Escajeda, who will also be the showrunner, states he “couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as Ghost Rider. This story hits every note for me – my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that.”

Joining Ghost Rider is Marvel’s Helstrom about Daimon and Ana Helstrom, siblings whose father was a “mysterious and powerful serial killer.” The show will follow the pair as they “track down the terrorizing worst of humanity.”

Per the comics, their father is Satan and Daimon is known as Hellstorm and the Son of Satan, first appearing in the Ghost Rider comics before getting his own Son of Satan series. He has demonic abilities including being able to travel between Hell and back. His sister is known as Satana in the comics.

Helstrom will be executive produced by Jeph Loeb and Paul Zbyszewski, who will also act as showrunner. He had this to say: “As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life, and I’m just grateful to everyone at Marvel Television and Hulu for the opportunity. Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around we’re adding some scars to that mix…We are thrilled Hulu will be moving into a new – admittedly chilling – corner of the Marvel Universe with Ghost Rider and Helstrom. Paul and Ingrid are crafting gripping adventures into fear that live in our Spirits of Vengeance cornerstone.”

As he pointed out these characters are in the same world of the comics, there is a good chance fans will get some type of crossover between the two series, with the possibility of an appearance on Marvel’s Runaways.

Now that Disney own’s 60% of Hulu, thanks to the purchase of 21st Century Fox, and since the relationship with Netflix ended earlier this year, it appears they will use the platform to continue to build the Marvel television universe there while using the Disney+ service for series about characters from the MCU. These two new shows join Runaways as well as the adult animated collection of M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler, and Howard the Duck, which will have their own crossover event of The Offenders.
