HBO Max Orders A Bit Of PRACTICAL MAGIC

The HBO Max streaming service has ordered a little practical magic for its pilot lineup. The fledgling streaming service has ordered a pilot of Rules of Magic, the prequel to the 1998 movie Practical Magic.

Based on the novels Rules of Magic and Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman, the story is set in 1960s New York. It follows the lovable, yet sometimes feared aunts from the movie, Franny and Jet Owens, and their brother, Vincent, as they deal with so-called ‘abnormalities’ that have isolated them. Through tumultuous times, they discover they come from a long line of witches. Through their journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, they have to face grief, war, bigotry and dark magic, as well as that pesky centuries-old curse designed to prevent them from finding love. We all know what happened to the sisters from the movie; however, their brother Vincent will leave “an unexpected legacy”.

Executive producer and writer Melissa Rosenberg is no stranger to dark and twisted stories, with a resume that consists of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Dexter, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Under the Warner Bros. TV and her Tall Girls Production banner, she will be joined by Danan Baratta (Jessica Jones), Denise Di Novi and Nina Tassler for PatMa Productions as well as the books’ author Hoffman.

The original movie was released in 1998 with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the next generation of Owen sister witches next to Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest’s Franny and Jet Owens. The movie followed the younger girls and their troubles with love, witchcraft, and the family curse forbidding love. The film opened to $13.1 million and has become a bit of a fun witchy romantic comedy for fans. (I mean, hi Aidan Quinn and Goran Visnjic…am I dating myself?)

Along with the pilot order, HBO Max has ordered scripts for 10 episodes and opened a writers room.
