HARRY POTTER Play Premiere Set

BANNER_News2013

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has confirmed her play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, will premiere at London’s Palace Theatre in Summer 2016.

Rowling took to Twitter to explain multiple aspects of the coming play on Friday:

  • It will tell a new story
  • It resulted from a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany, and herself
  • Rowling has had countless offers to extend Harry’s story over the years, but she has finally found her dream team to do it
  • The story is not a prequel
  • Rowling is confident that when audiences see her play, they will realize why it had to be a play and not any other medium
  • Again, this story is not a prequel

Rowling’s website stated at the time of this play’s initial reveal, December 2013, that this story would cover Harry Potter’s “early years” and be a different kind of look into the boy legend’s younger years. “What was it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs? This brand new play, which will be developed for the U.K. theater, will explore the previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast,” the website stated. “Featuring some of our favorite characters from the Harry Potter books, this new work will offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom Destiny has plans.”

There may be more to this story than just Harry though. Baz Bamigboye in his Daily Mail column on Friday, claimed the play would also explore the lives of Harry’s parents, Lily and James Potter, before they were murdered. He also added that the play may look at the relationship between Lily and her muggle sister Petunia, as well as the friendship between Lily and Severus Snape while the two were at Hogwarts.

The website for the Palace Theatre backs up Bamigboye’s claim, stating the play “will explore the backstory leading up to Harry’s parents untimely death at the hands of Lord Voldemort.”
