50! In Which We Discuss 80s Love

Remember that show on MTV? It was called I Love the 80s, and it was all about the pop culture and sweeping phenomena that made up each year of the decade that just won’t go away — mainly because Hollywood keeps remaking it.

49: In Which We Discuss Spider-Man & His Big News

Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Does whatever a spider can.

Like leap tall lawyers in a single bound! This week brought news of Spider-Man’s return to the Marvel house. Well, sort of. Sony’s still part of the plan, but in a reduced way. And here we were all ready to talk about the movies and TV shows of the 80s and 90s that are getting or have gotten reboots, and what about that era creates so much wistful fondness… but we have to go where the news goes. And this week, the news is all about Spider-Man.

“Spider-Pig. Spider-Pig…”

48: In Which We Discuss the Super Bowl Trailers

It’s that time of year again, when some pretty sizable sportsing thing happens and people lose their collective minds over advertisements that involve puppies, curvy women, and injurious amateur stunts.

But in the midst of all that, there are nuggets. Hints of things to come that we find far more interesting. The Super Bowl Trailer Park has opened, and it’s time to examine some of the things inside.

47: In Which We Deliver Our First Mix Tape for 2015

Ghostbusters, The Fantastic Four, Indiana Jones, indie films, art films, our films.

See how that went? This week, we hit a number of topics (digressions included) and discuss the new Ghostbusters project, along with the trailer for Josh Trank’s take on the Fantastic Four. Plus, the differences between Hollywood blockbusters and independent film productions, and an update on our own adaptation of The Statement of Randolph Carter.

46: In Which We Discuss Marvel’s Smashed Universe

Tuesday, January 20 — Marvel executives Tom Brevoort and Axel Alonso dropped the bomb that the Marvel universe was about to come crashing down around everyone’s ears (see our article here). And not just one particular Marvel universe; every Marvel universe is going away with the Secret Wars story starting in May.

As we don’t have a Level Eleventy-Seven this week due to the State of the Union address, and since it was a topic we were talking about anyway… here ya go.

45: In Which We Discuss News From the TCA Winter Press Tour

Time once again for the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, in which we get announcements and news for the upcoming television season (what’s left of it). New shows, new schedules, changes and cancellations. Costumes, casting, and much more. We discuss some of the highlights and what to expect between now and summer 2015.

44: In Which We Discuss The Potential of 2015

Delayed by just a bit of scheduling and snow and seasonal allergies and some kind of bug that will not go away … but it will not deter us from making our appointed rounds!

As we enter a new year, we talk about the potential of 2015 and all of the projects just around the corner, and it’s going to be a very busy year. Star Wars, Avengers, Mad Max, Tomorrowland, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Ant-ManThe Phoenix Incident, and more! Plus, we have plans and schemes of our own, of which we can share but little, in an effort to entice you to return for more next week.

43: In Which We Discuss Last-Minute Gifts

‘Twas the week before Christmas
And all through HQ
Not a podcaster was stirring
Except for these two.

With visions of listeners
All snuggled beside
Their smartphones and iPads
To hear our asides.

And in the spirit of the holidays, we present to you our (very limited) offering of the wide variety of gift ideas for your fellow geek. From comic books to anime to video games and all points in between, there’s still plenty of items you can put under the tree. We merely scratch the surface with our skimming of the web for ideas. And boy, are there many!

We’ll take off the next couple of weeks and be back in January. Our thanks to all of our listeners, who have made 2014 our most successful yet! Here’s to the new year and all of the opportunities it will bring.

To you and yours, have a great holiday and a wonderful new year!

42: In Which We Discuss Second Seasons That Weren’t

With the announcement that Syfy is developing Krypton, the discussion quickly turned from “shows we never wanted” to “shows we wish got a second season”. So herein lies our amiable prattle about the shows we miss (besides Firefly…): Journeyman, Brimstone, Tron Uprising, Invasion, Threshold… just to name a few.

What shows do you wish got a second season? What about a second chance? Reboots? Remakes? Let us know with an e-mail or a comment.

41: In Which We Discuss Shaming Spoilerists

Spoilers!

The Walking Dead audience got hit with them. There were several possibles before the Star Wars teaser went live. And there are countless other examples of information leaking out at just the most inopportune moments to ruin a show or movie for fans everywhere. How do we avoid it? How do we stop it? How do we punish those that do it?

Or is there a time and place when spoilers are OK? Acceptable? Even encouraged in the midst of discussion? Weigh in with what you think by sending us an e-mail.

40: In Which We Serve Up a Cornucopia of Topics

The shared universe. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Is it a necessary evil? Something to be feared? And what about this trend we see in the DC television shows — the hero and his team? Are the Nielsen ratings outdated? Is our future to be defined by Google? Or Facebook? Or Gooface? Foogle? And are you going to see the Star Wars teaser this weekend?

Plus a side dish of politics, and we bring it back full circle to the notion of the shared universe.

39: In Which We Discuss The Legacy of Glen A. Larson

Glen A. Larson passed away at age 77, losing his battle with cancer. As a producer and show creator, Larson was responsible for so many shows that informed our childhood — Knight Rider, Battlestar GalacticaThe Six Million Dollar Man, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The Fall Guy, Quincy M.E. and Magnum P.I., just to name a few of the more popular ones.

But there were misfires as well, and criticisms. Not everything in Larson’s career was gold. We talk about all of it (well… as much as we can in the time allowed) as we take a look back on the career of Glen Larson.

38: In Which We Discuss The DOCTOR WHO Finale

Moffat!!!

Love him or hate him, Steven Moffat has once again got everyone talking about that episode. The eighth season of Doctor Who went out with a whimper, but not before plenty of bang for the BBC’s buck. Is Clara done? Will they realize they’re lying to each other? Is the Doctor the type of person you want leading you into battle?

The finale gave us everything we could want: tension between the Doctor and his companion, a villain worthy of the Doctor’s cleverness, a Big Bad returning to menace humanity, and plenty of brightly-colored flags planted squarely in Classic Doctor Who — UNIT, the Brigadier, and… well, no. We musn’t spoil it. Just listen.

37: In Which We Discuss Syfy’s “Mea Culpa”

Syfy. The channel that made moves in 2009 (directly influencing the creation of this web site, by the way), moves that many felt were designed to abandon the core base of genre fans for all time.

But in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, head of programming Bill McGoldrick says it’s all about to get better. Really. With his marching orders from new chief Dave Howe, and with resources supplied by Comcast, it appears that Syfy may be making moves to recapture the spirit of The Sci Fi Channel of old.

36: In Which We Discuss The Return of The Terminator

Well, he said he’d be back, and he is.

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the T-800 in the new trilogy kickoff film, Terminator: Genisys, a title that has some scratching their heads and others rolling their eyes. Some say the story is so bad it will kill the franchise. Some claim to have inside information about the plot, and that it has shades of Back to the Future Part II overtones with all of the time stream crossings.

Don’t they know if you cross the streams, it could be bad?

35: In Which We Ask “Are Comics Just For Kids?”

Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu says — in a nutshell — comics are fine if you’re seven years old, but eventually you have to grow up and realize they’re right-wing poison that lead to “cultural genocide”. So, we address his philosophical take head-on and analyze the question at the heart of his apparent objection to superhero movies and comic books. Are they just for kids? Are they really?

34: In Which We Discuss A Half-Human Who

Mr. Handley has a theory.

Over the past few weeks, he’s been noodling on the possibility that the Doctor could actually be half-human, on his mother’s side, just as he claimed in the movie starring Paul McGann as the 8th incarnation of the Time Lord. So he sits down this week with Mr. Harvey to discuss the likelihood, and whether or not it actually would make a difference in the current run of Doctor Who.

33: In Which We Discuss STAR WARS

It’s one of the most (if not the most) anticipated movie events on the horizon. And we haven’t talked about it yet?

Star Wars continues to capture the imagination of generations, and with Star Wars: Rebels hitting the air waves, it’s at the top of the collective consciousness. This week, we scratch the surface of the rumors and news and other… (ahem) salacious crumbs. And have no fear! This won’t be the only time we discuss Star Wars, to be sure. Join us, and together we’ll rule the galaxy … erm, wait. No. Not yet.

32: In Which We Discuss The Evolution of the Comicon

This week we riff a bit on Doctor Who and how fangirls/fanboys still can’t seem to understand the nature of the 12th Doctor compared to the classic incarnations of the character (long story short: they need to get over Matt and David).

And then we get to our main topic: the conversation/twittersplosion over Denise Dorman’s musings about the changing nature of conventions and whether or not it’s even worth the money to have booth space at a lot of these events anymore. Is cosplay killing the comicon? Is the whole thing just getting too expensive? Is the nature of the audience changing to the point where conventions are no longer about the creators of the material?

31: In Which We Discuss Zombies and Other Dead Things

This week, Mr. Adair joins Mr. Harvey to discuss zombies and dead things and walking dead things…

With the season premiere of The Walking Dead just around the corner (October 12), and the new Z Nation on Syfy (plus the up-coming Town of the Living Dead), it’s a good opportunity for our resident zombie experts to discuss the popularity of zombie apocalypse shows. Are they played out? Are they still relevant? Do they still matter?

30: In Which We Discuss DC Comics And How They Might Get TV Right

Ah, DC Comics. We love to take pot shots, but that’s only because we really want you to get it right when it comes to adapting for filmed media. And while the movies still seem to be missing the target (your mileage may vary), it does appear that at least in the realm of television, some folks really get it.

Constantine, Gotham, Arrow, The Flash, and now Lucifer, Titans, and Supergirl on the way? Yes, please…

29: In Which We Discuss The Fall 2014 TV Season

No internet stupidity this week! At least, not that we’re talking about…

This week, we take a look at the upcoming fall TV season, and make some predictions and speculations on what’s going to work, what might not work as well as we’d like, and share our overall examination of the genre landscape on broadcast and cable — and there is a lot!

Also, since we’re in the midst of grinding out a new hosting server (because we’ve reached out limit on this one), the podcast is coming through SoundCloud this week. Hopefully, the gremlins will leave it alone…

28: In Which We Discuss The Inhumanity of the Internet

Finally! We’ve been teasing it for weeks, and it’s finally time to uncover that wretched hive of scum and villainy that is … the internet. Served up for you here with our usual brilliance and good taste, with a dash of Patton Oswalt, 4chan, rude trolls, and porn. Well, we talk about it. We don’t share any with you. Remember, we said good taste…

And since we mentioned it, here’s the entire text of Mending Wall by Robert Frost:

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
“Stay where you are until our backs are turned!”
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, “Good fences make good neighbors.”
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
“Why do they make good neighbors? Isn’t it
Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I’d ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offense.
Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That wants it down.” I could say “Elves” to him,
But it’s not elves exactly, and I’d rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father’s saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, “Good fences make good neighbors.”

27: In Which We Take a Deep Breath and Discuss DOCTOR WHO

The moment has finally arrived! The return of Doctor Who. With a new face. A new mission. A new enemy? Certainly a new dynamic to the show, with Peter Capaldi making his first full-episode appearance as the Doctor. What does this mean for his relationship with Clara? How much of this episode is strictly fan service?

The episode has a lot to recommend it, and we discuss the ins and outs of Capaldi’s Doctor and how the show has definitely swerved into Classic Who territory in terms of how it feels. And how about that new opening title sequence? And the theme? And the … well, just listen.

26: In Which We Discuss Dating Geek Girls & Marketing to Girl Geeks

Over the course of the last couple of weeks, the idea of dating has been a part of the off-mic conversations, so we thought we’d lighten up a bit and try to opine about whether ’tis nobler to date “within the genre” or not — or whether it even matters.

Plus, in a related tangent, we also take a look at some of the marketing decisions surrounding the Guardians of the Galaxy, and how it’s indicative of a bigger problem that we should have been past long ago… especially since there’s so much evidence that girls are genre fans just as much as boys are.

This is the 21st century now, right?

25: In Which We Discuss Robin Williams, Aquaman, and More

This week: the technology cooperated enough for us to get back on schedule. Robin Williams, data mining, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy, screenwriting by committee, Star Wars, Star Trek (should Orci direct the next one?), and Babylon 5 (reboot? sequel? wha-huh?)

It’s another hodgepodge episode, complete with digressions and diversions.

24: In Which We Discuss A Wrinkle on Pern… (ahem)

Apologies for the delay in getting this out this week — we tell the tale of the Gremlins in the Station — but we have finally managed to record (and save) an episode this week before the week was over. This time out, we try to stay a little lighter and talk about the recent announcement that Warner Brothers has optioned the film rights to two beloved classic genre series — The Dragonriders of Pern and A Wrinkle in Time stories — and how … cautiously optimistic we are (read that “Please don’t screw this up, WB”) about both.

23: In Which We Discuss San Diego Comic-Con Issues

In the aftermath of San Diego Comic-Con, we talk about several things — most notably the fight that’s brewing between SDCC and Salt Lake Comic Con (and by extension, every other Comic Con on the planet), as well as the incidents of harassment and assault that took place over the weekend. Is SDCC getting too big for its britches? Is the “big dog” starting to bark and growl more? Maybe a little too much? Are the usual criticisms of San Diego Comic-Con starting to be more relevant?

Note: the second half of the show gets a little more PG-13 due to the subject matter.

22: In Which We Discuss Alan Moore Vs. HERCULES

This week: Mr. Harvey and Mr. Hunt take on Alan Moore. Well, no, actually… Alan Moore takes on Hercules and Radical Studios. The new adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson, hits theaters Friday the 25th, and Mr. Moore would very much rather you didn’t see it. On principle. See, the film production team and the publishers have worked it so that — according to an interview in Bleeding Cool — comics writer Steve Moore didn’t get any compensation for the adaptation. And now that he’s passed away, the marketing has decided to acknowledge his part in the source material. Only it’s not in a way you’d find in good taste.

Alan Moore uses the word “vile”.

21: In Which We Discuss Dashcon, DOCTOR WHO, and Duty as Journalists

The plan was to talk about Doctor Who and the season eight scripts that have leaked. This raises the question of our responsibilities and obligations as reporters (or journalists) and our impulses as fans. And we also talk about things we’d like to do with SciFi4Me and how we can do more, better.

With plenty of digression — including a discussion that’s totally off our planned topic — we delve into Doctor Who season eight without actually talking about season eight… (shhhh… spoilers!)

____________________

20: In Which We Discuss Lies, Leaks, and the Amells

This week: Mr. Harvey and Mr. Hunt discuss the latest casting news for The Flash and Arrow. Firestorm? The Atom? Plus, what about that “fake script” written by Kevin Smith for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that we’ve been hearing about? Did it happen? Is there a script?

Speaking of scripts, some Doctor Who season eight scripts have leaked. And Mr. Harvey, especially, has some thoughts on that.

Also, the idea of lying as a marketing tactic comes up in the conversation. Are you willing to let the studios lie to you about the movies you see?

19: In Which We Discuss What Might Have Been

This week: we discuss the adaptations that almost were… or might be again after almost having been once.

In the wake of Fox cancelling Heiroglyph before it ever sees the light of day, we look at other projects that almost made it to pilot, to series…  shows like The 6th Gun, Powers, Preacher, American Gods… and big projects like The Dark Tower and Fables. Some of them are gone for good, but some of them are back for another chance at development. And some of them…. well, we’re just not sure yet.

18: In Which We Discuss… Shh! (Secret Identities)

This week: Mr. Harvey and Mr. Hunt discuss the finer points of secret identities. Why do they have to be lame? Why does the alter-ego turn into someone unlikeable? Is there a way to hide your superhero identity and still be a regular nice person?

From Clark Kent to Bruce Wayne, Diana of Themyscira to Jennifer Walters, we examine just what goes into a secret identity (or the abandonment thereof) and how the secrets and reveals have played out for good or ill over the years.

17: In Which We Discuss EDGE OF TOMORROW and Aquaman and Stuff

This week, we take on the Fan Film — good? bad? Does it help or hurt a particular franchise? What should the official productions be thinking about the unofficial ones (especially since some of them are so good)?

Also: Edge of Tomorrow and why you should go see it in the theaters and not wait for it to hit home video. Because it’s good. Despite how you may feel about Tom Cruise, you should not miss this film.

Plus: DC Comics movies, Once Upon a Time, Maleficent, and the Dragonriders of Pern all get a little attention this week.

16: In Which We Go Long and Discuss A Great Many Things…

We have the good folks over at SuperheroStuff to thank for this episode. See, when they posted the link to our show over on their Facebook page, they told their fans this was a weekly show. And that got us thinking “Well, maybe we should do it weekly…”

To set the table: in our discussion of various possible topics, we ended up talking about a lot of different things, and those discussions we each extensive enough that we finally said, “We should be recording all of this.” So we did. The result is a smorgasbord of random topics, among them:

Harassment policy at San Diego Comic Con, Star Trek V, Wonder Woman (more detail over on Echo Chamber), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ghostbusters 3, Buck Rogers, 90s television, John Carter, and Flash Gordon. And that is, by no means, the entire list of things we discuss this week.

14: In Which We Discuss Comic Book Movies & TV

Man of Steel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy… when it comes to comic book movies and television, there’s no lack of material.

Recorded during Free Comic Book Day, our discussion wanders around the movie and TV adaptations, with a look at what’s coming up in the new season.

H2O: In Which We Discuss Sex, Drugs, and Internet Trolls

[Editor’s Note: given some of the subject matter we discuss, this particular podcast is PG-16 or so…]

In the wake of the lawsuit just brought against X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer, we take a look at the question as to whether or not you can separate creator from the creation. Does the personal life and beliefs of a filmmaker or writer or other creative type affect your appreciation for their work?

Bryan Singer. Orson Scott Card. Woody Allen. Roman Polansky. Can works like Ender’s Game or X-Men be viewed objectively, or does your consumption of certain media change as you learn more about the private lives of the people behind the work? We weigh in with our opinions. We’d love to hear yours, too.

12: In Which We Discuss SPIDER-MAN

With all of our attention being drawn to the DC Cinematic Universe, we realized we’ve neglected the other Marvel movie hasn’t gotten a lot of attention from us. So we’ll take this opportunity to discuss The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and our expectations and speculations about what this film sets up for Sony and their Spider-Movie Universe moving forward.

And is this the sequel that plays out like The Empire Strikes Back? Is this the dark chapter of the trilogy, wherein we get death and dismay? Mr. Hunt makes a prediction that we’ll have to revisit when the movie comes out.

11: In Which We Discuss JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR & JLA ADVENTURES

Warner Brothers has released two Justice League stories, and they couldn’t be more different.

In this edition of H2O, we take a look at Justice League: War, an adaptation of the first six issues of the New 52 Justice League title — featuring Darkseid’s invasion of Earth and the origin of Cyborg. And as you’ll soon gather, it’s not scoring many points with us.

And what about JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time? Released with very little (if any) fanfare, it’s very much not a New 52 title, and more like you would imagine Bruce Timm’s take on Super Friends might be. Even with a couple of logic holes, it’s much easier to recommend for family viewing.

10: In Which We Discuss Derivatives

Derivatives. They say there’s no such thing as an original idea anymore. They say Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and has lost all originality. They say it’s all been done before. Are they right?

On the heels of Helix and Intelligence bowing on television, we take a look at just how these stories are using elements that should be quite familiar to genre fans of all stripes. Because in these (and other) cases, it actually has been done before.

09: In Which We Discuss the Latest on MAN OF STEEL 2

There are a lot of rumors floating around as it concerns the sequel to Man of Steel. Casting rumors, title rumors, plot rumors… but very little in the way of actual factual information about the production. We know it’s going to shoot in Detroit. We know some of the cast. We know GM might be working up a new design on the Batmobile.

But other than a paltry few details, we have very little to go on. Which is why the Internet is a feeding frenzy of rumor and speculation. Mister Harvey and Mister Hunt go through a lot of it with analysis, speculation, and some wishes for the upcoming film.

08: Sequels We Want, Sequels We Got

Sequels!

Nowadays, sequels are the general rule. It seems every movie is the setup for another movie, or trilogy, or series, or whatever. But there was a time when not every movie automatically got a sequel. Nothing was guaranteed, and there were a few films that really truly need a sequel, but never got one.

06: Is DC Comics a Train Wreck Yet?

The past three years have given us quite a bit of fodder for discussion over what may or may not be going on in the editorial offices at DC. Creative teams leaving abruptly. So, it appears the Fox network is working up a new adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

How will it stack up to the original material? How will it stack up against the movie? Should Fox even be trying this? In this One Shot, Mr. Harvey and Mr. Hunt opine on Alan Moore’s original graphic novel and what it means for a television network to be making this attempt. Given that the modern day literature is this thing called “television”, we pull from that source to assemble our own League.

What characters do you want to see in a new League? Let us know in the comments.

04: Wherein We Examine Pixar’s 22 Rules

03: Timey Wimey at 88mph

In this episode, we look at the machines, the magic, and the other non-technical means for traveling through time — the Guardian of Forever, the TARDIS, the DeLorean… along with a discussion of good storytelling and how time travel is usually just a device to get us into the story. And no matter what the method, it still needs to be a good story.

02: BATWOMAN

In a surprise letter to the general public, Batwoman creative team J.H. Williams III and Haden Blackman announced that issue #26 would be their last, citing interference and last-minute editorial changes at DC Comics, among which was the denial to follow through on several story plans already approved by editors and pulled at the last minute.

Mr. Harvey and Mr. Hunt opine what this means for the title, and what it may indicate as to the mindset of the higher-ups in charge at the publisher. And despite the internet exploding over the gay marriage issue, that’s not what it’s about.

Christmas 2012: We’re getting quite a few Gallifreyan presents — Syfy is running K-9 all day, whilst BBC America is doing a Doctor Who marathon up until the new Christmas Special tonight (and did you catch the Firefly marathon on Science yesterday?)

Which brings us to the topic at hand: how on Earth can Santa deliver all those presents to the children of the Earth? Our Mr. Handley has discussed the possible existence — and technology — of Santa in several pieces (starting here), but Mr. Harvey and I take a slightly different focus.

We now call it episode #00.
