GALAXY QUEST Lands at Amazon

“Never give up! Never surrender!”

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Amazon Studios has made a deal to develop a Galaxy Quest television series.

As reported back in April, the cult hit film from 1999 was rumored to be getting the TV spinoff treatment with Paramount TV shopping the project around to digital and broadcast outlets. Robert Gordon, one of the screenwriters on the original movie, will pen the pilot as well as executive produce along with original director Dean Parisot, who will also direct the pilot. Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, the movie’s original executive producers, are also on board as EPs on the TV run.

The movie was a parody/tribute to the original Star Trek, with the crew of a long-cancelled TV show being recruited to help actual aliens who’ve accurately built a working version of the ship from the show, the NSEA Protector (NTE-3120 — NTE meaning “Not the Enterprise“). Starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell, and Justin Long in his motion picture debut, the film was voted “7th best Star Trek film” by fans at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas.

New questions generated by this news:

  1. Will it be a sequel or a reboot?
  2. Will it be a show about the cast? Or will it actually be Galaxy Quest, the fictional show-within-the-movie?
  3. Will any of the original cast make appearances in the TV show?
  4. Can Amazon Studios succeed with Galaxy Quest where they failed with Zombieland?
  5. If it’s a show about the cast, will they shoot any scenes at conventions and get fans involved?

No other details are available yet, but by Grabthar’s Hammer, we’ll bring updates to you as soon as we have them.
