Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is moving ahead with The New Mutants, the recently announced TV series a new movie set in the same universe as the X-Men films.

Headshot_JoshBooneAccording to the report, Fox has inked a deal with Josh Boone, who directed The Fault in Our Stars, to co-write and direct. Boone’s co-writer is Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner are set to produce. Kinberg has been involved in the X-Men franchise as a writer and producer, and is also involved in Fantastic Four, Deadpool, the Star Wars Anthology films, and Star Wars Rebels.

The success of The Fault in Our Stars — $307 million worldwide off a $12 million budget — put Boone on the radar for many upcoming projects. Among them: the reboot of The Stand, based on Stephen King’s novel, and possibly the next Spider-Man solo film. He’s already set for The Vampire Chronicles, which is a reboot based on the Anne Rice Interview With a Vampire novels.

If his current schedule holds, The New Mutants is likely a couple of years out.

The New Mutants were created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. They first appeared in 1982’s Marvel Graphic Novel #4. The group was one of the first spinoffs to come out of the popular Claremont run on the X-books, and there have been three New Mutants titles since. We’ve yet to hear if the movie will feature the original New Mutants, or if there will be a new batch of characters that avoids any conflict with the current film franchise.

[Updated to correct that this is a movie project, not a TV series]
