The episode goes through many of the plot points brought up in the previous episode:

  • Plot A – Vanessa (Kelly Overton) is captured by Julius (Aleks Paunovic) in order to rescue some Refugees
  • Plot B – There is a killer among the Original Hospital Survivors. They also have to deal with the new Refugees Vanessa brought in.
  • Plot C – Other Survivors, slaves to Head Vampires, are plotting to destroy a major Power Plant, exposing them to sunlight.

The episode begins with Plot A. Vanessa is captured and brought to Julius. Julius muses that now that he has Vanessa in his clutches, he can overthrow Dmitri, revealing that the Head Vampires have factions and tiers of power. This may tie into the main plot later. Anyway, Julius forces Vanessa to fight a vampiric Susan (Hilary Jardine), a friend of Vanessa’s from before her coma. Susan taunts Vanessa by describing her attacking Vanessa’s daughter, goading Vanessa into biting her.

After Susan turns back into a human, Vanessa whispers to her to start running for the exit, which they then do. The Lesser Vampires, being terrified of Vanessa, do not immediately pursue her until Julius promises them fresh meat if they bring them back alive. Julius also notes that there is something in the basement that could kill them without the vampires’ help.

The episode then cuts to the new Refugees coming into the hospital, with Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro) explaining the situation. Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) immediately wants to leave to find Vanessa, but Mohamad convinces him to at least show the Refugees the ropes first.

Brenden (Terry Chen), the leader of the Refugees, introduces himself to Axel, telling them that while he’s the leader he’s grateful and will do anything to help. Axel is a little apprehensive, however, as water is running low and he catches some of Brenden’s group trying to steal supplies. Then, everything goes south when another person (a previously injured member of Brenden’s group) turns up dead. Axel confesses there is a murderer among them, and Brenden responds by stealing a gun and forcing Axel’s group into the cage where Doc was when she was a vampire.

Mohamad confesses to the murders, and is ‘escorted’ out of the hospital and left outside, defenseless. Before they force him out, Brenden confesses that he knows the Mohamad is lying about being the murderer, but he has to do something in order to keep the peace among his own group.

After Mohamad is left, the show cuts to Sheema (Naika Toussaint) breaking into Rebecca’s (Laura Mennell) place once again, but this time Rebecca isn’t there, so she goes in and steals what appears to be a blueprint off of a shelf of blueprints. Before she can escape, however, Rebecca catches her and taunts her. Surprisingly, instead of killing her and drinking her blood, she tells her to ‘leave’. Even with the blueprints! The move was extremely surprising, and not explained in the episode. The move may tie into the power feud between the vampires brought up in the episode and hopefully not just ‘plot armor’.

The episode ends with Susan explaining that she actually has no idea what happened to Vanessa’s daughter after the cops took her when Vanessa was ‘killed’, and that she was turned into a vampire soon after. Vanessa forgives her and promises to get her to the hospital. The last shot of the episode is them finding something in the basement.

This episode is really well put together in that it really seamlessly blends all of the events together. It really feels like everything is happening at the same time, with all of the elements making sense and are not too overwhelming. Vanessa’s and Sheema’s plots are very fascinating and draw the viewer into wanting to root for them and also wanting the mysteries surrounding them and their environment to be resolved. Again, the characters really draw you in more so than the plot, but the plot is improving.

The other mysteries brought up, why Rebecca let Sheema go and what is in the basement of Julian’s warehouse, are very fascinating and hopefully will pay off in unique ways.

Susan will be a great addition, as now Vanessa has someone by her side that she can truly trust since they knew each other before and Susan knows the importance of locating her daughter.

The only downside is once again the murder plot is very boring and isn’t resolved when it should have been rather quickly. Especially now that there are other people who want to take over the hospital. It’s just dead weight and wholly unnecessary. Really the other survivors need to be given something else to do rather than just stand around accusing each other. It really feels like the writers had no idea what to do with these characters.

Regardless, Vanessa gets the main plot of the episode this time and that’s where the show really shines. If the show continues to use its lead more and more the show will be one to remember.

All in all, this was a thrilling episode. It has just enough twists and turns to keep one engaged while keeping the audience in suspense for the next episode.

Van Helsing airs Friday nights at 10/9c on Syfy.
