Eureka Cancelled (Sheriff Carter is Not Happy)

Here I was, all worried about Haven’s fate, when suddenly I was tipped off by Felicia Day’s (@feliciaday) and Wil Wheaton’s (@wilw) tweets about this surprise news:  Eureka’s fifth season will be its last.

Not a week after SyFy announced that they would order six-additional episodes for a brief sixth season to end the series, the network has about-faced.  They have dropped plans for the final six episodes, relying on the 13 episodes that are currently filming to end the show’s run.  It is an interesting move by the network as Eureka has been one of its strongest-performing original series and has only been out-performed recently by Warehouse 13 (currently in its third season).  EW.com quoted a statement from SyFy:

“After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.

There is a silver lining, in that there are five remaining episodes in season four in addition to the 13 season five episodes.  With the fifth season still in production there is a hope that the writers can whip up a satisfying ending to the series.

Eureka started its fourth season with a major twist that changed the show’s dynamic for many of the characters.  While it is debatable whether the move injected new life and creativity into the series or signified a ‘jump the shark’ moment, the ratings for the series have since remained strong by cable standards.  The second half of season four also saw the addition of notable guest stars, including Felicia Day and the return of Wil Wheaton’s ‘Dr. Parrish,’ that only enhanced the variety of the series’ large ensemble cast.

After the cancellation of Caprica last year, Stargate: Universe this year, and this most recent announcement regarding Eureka, SyFy’s lineup of original ‘science fiction’ programming has taken quite a hit.  Time will tell what the future holds for the network’s original lineup.

Enjoy Eureka’s remaining episodes and take comfort that the series has the chance to end its run gracefully.  Who knows, perhaps we have not seen the last of the residents of this small, top-secret research town.  In Eureka, stranger things have happened.

  • I long ago gave up on trying to figure out what is behind SyFy’s decision-making process. LOL But I do know that when shows get too expensive to produce the axe is quick to follow.
