E3 Recap: Devolver Digital

E3 has kicked off at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and there have been several big announcements. Devolver Digital had many new games and expansions to show off in its very gory E3 show. Here’s everything they announced.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Fall Guys Ultimate Knockout is a battle royale game with 100 players per match. The gameplay will have players racing to collect a crown as they shove each other over and try to avoid deadly obstacles. This colorful death race will release in early 2020 for both PS4 and PC.

First Impressions: It’s always nice to see developers expand upon a genre with new and innovative additions to a genre that many thought was getting stale. It’s too early to say if the gameplay is any good, though, because none was shown.

Devolver Bootleg

Devolver Bootleg is an 8-in-1 collection of eight games inspired by other retro titles, all with varying genres of gameplay. The game will include titles like Hotline Milwaukee, Catsylvania, and Enter The Gun Dungeon. This retro romp of throwback games is out now, and is 1% off until June 16th.

First Impressions: The only people who aren’t excited by retro titles are the people who have never played them. This looks perfect for anyone who’s a fan of recent retro releases.

Carrion

Carrion is a reverse horror game where you assume the role of a crimson beast, bent on consuming those that imprisoned you. Devolver Digital showed off some fast paced gameplay where you dodge flamethrowers and eat as many scientists as you can find. This action-adventure gorefest releases in 2020 for both PC and console.

First Impressions: If there’s one thing that video games do well, it’s reversing the role of hero and monster. Carrion looks like it’s no exception to this long history of games where you get to be the very thing that ends humanity.

Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead

Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead is an upcoming first person arcade shooter, set in the world of the smash hit Enter the Gungeon. It will have you, the player, go against a slew of enemies as you race to find treasure. The gameplay will be light gun based, which means that you’ll need to point a real plastic gun at your enemies to fight them off.  Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead will release for arcades in 2020.

First Impressions: Light Gun games, while lacking in innovation, are almost always fun to play. Its retro graphics are also a pleasant sight to behold.

The Messenger: Picnic Panic

Devolver didn’t just have new games to show off, though. They also announced a free expansion to their Ninja Gaiden-esque platformer, The Messenger. The game has a summer theme to it, and it looks to be a lot more bright and vivid than the base game, as the trailer promises that it’s a “tropical adventure”. This free expansion shall release on July 11th, for PC, Switch, and the PS4.

First Impressions: While it doesn’t look like much was added to the gameplay, this free expansion promises more of the same satisfying platforming that the original game had. As such, this colorful expansion promises to be just as good as the main game.

Whether you love or hate Devolver, they’re certainly not afraid to try new things, and this slew of new announcements was no exception. For more information regarding these games and their upcoming titles, visit their official website.
