Despite Negative Reviews, BATMAN v SUPERMAN Breaks Records
Despite the dark night of reviews of the week, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has had a super weekend at the box office.
Box Office Mojo reports that the sequel to Man of Steel has brought in $424.1 million in worldwide receipts, making it the fifth highest grossing film of 2016. Domestic box office is reported to be $170.1 million.
On the flip side of that success, however, the movie is sitting at an aggregate 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 73%.

“The reviews did not matter at all,” an exec tells Deadline. “Every market is over-performing.”
“Fans around the world have embraced the movie,” Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president, told Variety. “The beauty of moving our date is that strategically it allowed us to open up around the world at the same time and in a time frame where there’s not a lot of competition.” Originally, the film was set to open the same weekend as Captain America: Civil War, but Warners moved it to March to take advantage of the slow month.
The true test will be in the second weekend, where the ticket revenue will either maintain momentum or experience a sharp decline.
